The engagement switch was caused by more than just the catching Nabiki. They had been arguing earlier as well.

That's just it. By this time in the fic Ranma would have been seeing Shampoo 'a lot' in the last three months. Through out that time Akane been brooding and fighting with Ranma about it. Ranma complementing Kasumi was just the tip of the ice burg for Akane to start blowing up at him.

three headed dog wrote:Also should mention if Akane breaks the engagement it just switches it to one of her sisters. The engagement is to a Tendo -not Akane specifically.

An engagement to Kasumi would be the least stressful for Ranma since everyone knows that they'll never get married. That way Ranma will feel more comfortable to do what he want's.

So after the school incident, we see everyone at the dining table to talk about what happened.

Ranma will no doubtingly apologies to Kasumi and tell her that she doesn't have to be engaged to him if she doesn't want to.

Kasumi will probably say that it's ok to leave it this way for now.

when the meeting is over Ranma will ask Kasumi in privet why she didn't object to the engagement.

And Kasumi will say that she though both him and Akane might have needed a break for a little while. Or something along those lines.

I'm not so sure about that. Depending on how traditional Kasumi is, since she is the eldest daughter (the one usually engaged first) and is supposed to obey her father in these types of situations (that is the japanese way). If Kasumi was engaged to Ranma at first, it is entirely possible they would already be married. Akane and Nabiki are not traditional stereotypical Japanese girls and much more likely to disobey their father, Kasumi might be more traditional.

One way to introduce your new character is have her be a purchased traded for Fiancee, like the takeout race girl. With one difference, she has a written and stamped contract, between her grandparents and Genma's father (Apple doesn't fall far from the tree). Also, make her younger or act younger (Genki Girl) and thus more interested in Ranma as a big brother than a fiancee (sempai/kohai) and thus a little embarrassed about the whole fiancee thing, that would also change the dynamic.

Having somebody just playing Akane's game of putting the worst interpretation on somebody's actions come back and hit Akane in the face would give plenty of chances for confrontations.

She peeped on Ranma in the bathroom and now I'm afraid to take a bath cause she'll peep on me! That's not what happened! So you didn't walk in on him unannounced? And stare?!

Whether she's the devil in plain sight or just says the wrong thing at the wrong time, I leave to you.

Or on a different note, you could just have her flirt with Ranma, then steal a sample of some Akane's cooking that Akane made for Ranma, and Ranma escorts the girl to the school infirmary. And Akane could fly off the handle that her cooking is fine, they left to go make out in the infirmary. A bad stomach ache from Akane's cooking is hardly a stretch.

I think a case could be made that the more emotional Akane gets while cooking the worse the food turns out. Maybe her pouring all her heart into her work preparing meals could be the basis for the mounting straws straining the relationship?

Defining "canonical" is hard, because the violence is slapstick, and the characters insanely tough. But the violence does happen, and nobody is invulnerable. In several fanfics I've read, Akane simply kills Ranma. That puts him off no end, and he (or she) goes off and has an afterlife with some other woman, demon, or anthropomorphic personification. If your original character is capable of resurrecting people, that could do the job nicely.

Endless Consequences is a decent example of the breed, not complete.

It just came to me to suggest two scenes from the anime that may or may not reveal aspects of Akane's character that might help you in your fanfics.

At the end of "Ranma the Lady Killer", Akane finally discovers that the bandaid she put on Ranma was impregnated with aphrodesiac, and that is why Ranma has been so unusually flirtatious that day. She tells Ukyo & Shampoo, who are duelling over the right to ask Ranma to sign their marriage license, that it's pointless to do so, asking about how Ranma must be feeling when they are dumbfounded by this.

Similarly, we have the end of "Am I...Pretty? Ranma's Declaration of Womanhood!" - at the start of this episode, Akane, in one of her usual overreactions, bashed Ranma in the face with a frying pan, causing him to fall into the koi pond and hit the back of his head quite violently on a rock. When she woke up, Ranma's personality had been replaced by that of a stereotypical girly-girl. Akane, after all the havoc that has resulted, including Ranma-onna being willing to model clothing for Happosai so that he would stop crying, breaks down and admits tearfully that while she hates the way Ranma acts normally, this isn't him, begging him to snap out of it. When Ranma-onna gently tells her that it's impossible for her to simply 'snap out of it', Akane flies into a violent rage and attacks her viciously, despite having learned that Ranma's new persona is a total pacifist who faints at the sight of blood, chasing her around the yard and screaming at her that she should stay a girl, if that's the way she feels.

I'm not so sure about the first one but the amnesia angle sounds pretty good actually.

I was actually thinking that the way Akane acts in those events, particularly the second one, might help you think of a way for her to drive Ranma away.

I think I'm actually going to take the amnesia idea of yours except I think he's going to have regular amnesia instead of thinking he's a girl.

Thanks SpaceKnight of Chaos

So, my bringing up the fact that Akane has caused temporary brain damage (for lack of a better word) to Ranma before in the anime, coupled with the fact you're going for an 'amalgamated' base canon, has allowed you to devise a method for having Ranma meet and fall in love with your OC: to whit, having him gain amnesia courtesy of a blow from Akane and, while wandering, falling in love with the OC, which prompts Akane/Genma & Soun to try and bring him back to his senses, only for his restored memories to confirm his feelings are for the OC and not Akane?

Glad that I could help you. Just to point out, one thing that might help is to figure out precisely how dominant the anime portion of your base canon is compared to the manga, as the anime fiancees are much nicer (particularly Shampoo & Kodachi); for example, in the anime, Shampoo was willing to let Ranma go back to Akane during the Instant Nanniichuan story.

Yeah, as far as I know, I don't really know if manga Shampoo really loves Ranma, or perhaps she deludes herself into thinking she does.

Anime Shampoo clearly loves Ranma, which she shows a bunch of times through out the anime.

Manga Akane calms down quite a bit, especially toward the end of the sires. Anime Akane however, consistently keeps blowing up at Ranma and going out of control.

I think I'm going to take most of their personality treats from the manga but with anime episodes and cannon squeezed in.

This is probably going to be a super complicated fic but I defiantly like challenges.

My advice: with the Ranma/Shampoo story, use Shampoo's anime characterization. With the Ranma/OC story, use the manga characterizations of the other fiancees. In either case, for Akane's character, you can either use how she is in the anime (which makes it a bit more understandable when Ranma finally breaks up with her), or try and blend aspects of both canons together. Using her anime character is easiest though.

By the way, where do you intend to post these stories once you get them done? As something of a Knight of the Chinese Fiancee, I take great interest in Ranma/Shampoo works- there's far too few of them as it is.

Also, would you mind giving some details as to your Original Character here? I might be able to comment on things that might help her win Ranma, as well as pointing out things that could cause her to come off as Mary Sueish.

Akane is complicated since her manga self contradicts her anime self. However, I want to make Akane's actions and personality as cannon to both as possible. I also want both anime and manga fans to recognize her as acting cannon from both. So I'm going to be combining both cannons together somehow. This is going to be a rather hard feet to pull off but like I said earlier, I like a good challenge.

I plan to write out the whole story first and then post one chapter a month on fanfiction.net. So this is going to take a very long time indeed. I do however intend to post every chapter here one at a time, for people to see it and give me C&C.

My OC is a very emotional hurt and hardened character. Her overall personality is like that of Naruto's Sasuke but not nearly as cold or emo; She's more the quiet and philosophical type mixed with some sinisisum and sarcasm. My OC's name is Ying-hau which means Sakura in Chinese. She and her family are from the Chinese Amazon village. She also has some very old and deep ties with Shampoo. She was taken in and trained by Chun li when her parents were murdered by an unknown person. Ying-hau lives and fights for the chance that one day she might have her revenge. She meets Ranma on a request from Chun li that she train with someone of her own skill and age.

That about sums up her personality and history without giving to much away. I would post a picture but I don't know if I'm aloud to do that here.
