The thing in japanese is that many Kanji have the same reading; "Ran" for example can be 乱 (Riot, War, Disruption or, as we more often use it around these parts, Chaos), 嵐 (tempest), 卵 (ovum(!)), 羝 (male sheep) or 蘭 (Orchid), along with a dozen other possibilities.
The "ko" used is usually 子, "child", very common at the end of female names. The list of kanji using "ko" is phenomenal, so I won't even give examples.
So yeah, Ranko could mean "Orchid Child", "Storm Child", "Chaos/Disorder/War Child" just as well as it could mean "Male Sheep?" 羝乎 or "ovum offspring" 卵仔.
蘭子 would be Orchid Child, of course.
