Neon Gender Evangelion

Postby Atlan » Sat Sep 15, 2007 5:39 am

Bliss recently posted a link in the 'Favourite Vidoes' thread. It was an alternate opening for Neon Genesis Evangelion, only everyone's gender was reversed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9ZOf-3q2x4

And, well, it gave me an idea for a fic. It would be a retelling of Eva, only gender swapped. Shinji-chan as a shy, demure girl with abandoment issues. Asuka with a severe anger problem, only worsened by the fact that a little girl keeps beating him. Kaji, the tramp. And so on.

The problem I have at the moment, is that I need new names for everyone.

Here's what i've got (and what I dont)

The (main) pilots
Shinji
Asuka
Rei - Ray

The Staff at Nerv
Misato
Gendo
Fuyutsuki (no change needed- I'm fairly sure it's his last name)
Ritsuko
Naoko Akagi

The bridge bunnys
Makoto - (no change needed- Makoto seems to be a gender nutural name)
Maya
Shigeru

The friends from School
Toji
Kensuke
Hikari (class rep)

The others
Chairman Keel
Kaji
Yui
Kaworu
The Banana, the Atheist's Nightmare:

God made it with a non-slip surface, a color coded system so we know when to eat it, and an easy open tab at the top of the banana. It's just the right shape for a mouth and is easy to digest!!

Just swap Shinji and Rei's names. In an episode of Eva there was a flashback where Yui (who was pregnent with Shinji) and Gendo were talking about what to name their baby and the decision was Shinji if it was a boy and Rei if it was a girl.

What's funny is that is what EVA did, it reversed the genders of many of the common Sentai/Giant Robot cliches/archtypes. Whiny brat who saves the day, make it a him. Cool silent Loner guy, becomes Ayanmai Rei. Tough Ranma-type fighter, became Asuka. Hard-drinking, womanizing, one-of-the -guys commanding officer, became Misato.

As for names: Shinji - > Nadia (of 'Blue Water' fame, give Shinji a tan and implants, and viola!)

Asuka -> Al, just Al (further inquiries will result in severe pain), a little mystery is good for a story. Besides when the big bad decided to destroy 'Just Al' but finding out his name is Alphonzoishez, and discovers it is just Al . . . big bads deserve their master plans to fall apart too.

You know thinking about the gender swap that makes it so it's now a father who paterned the main computer off his brain. Can Nerve still work that way? I mean do you really trust a guys mind seperated into 3 selves?

Of course not; if the Magi were based on the structure of a man's mind, one of them would constantly be asleep, the other would be a Happosai-esque pervert, and the last one would constantly be hung-over. :D

The computer was originaly Her mom as a Scientist, A Mother, and herself as a woman. Scientist would probably stay in there but look at a stereotypical father. And then a Stereotypical man. Oh yeah lusts will be in there. Good thing it takes a 2 out of 3 consensus vote.

If the Akagis were male they wouldn’t necessarily have been pretentious to have bothered with a trio of cyber brains for the NERV computer processing systems. Throughout the series NERV really uses them for conventional data processing and model analysis instead of true AIs. That can be just as easily done with conventional Supercomputer architecture setup so as to use voting and neural network algorithms. Unlike messing around with cyber brains such a system would not have to deal with the extra mess that comes from the human brain really not being optimal in nature for that kind of computing.

The human brain basically programs and stores data via rewiring itself and connecting new circuits with old ones. Plus it loves to freak itself out for just about anything and everything via stress. This isn’t something that’s really desirable for a computer. The human factor of judgement which a human has over a computer would be sketchy at best with a cyber brain. We don’t really have a reliable way to teach people good judgment, which is no small part of the reason why we can’t give it to computers. In practice one usually uses screening methods to find people of competence in limited areas, and after they’ve proved their judgement is good trusting it only really in those limited areas. Expecting a cyber brain to somehow neatly avoid this, particularly over a rather wide range of areas is absurd, and one time in EoE that the Magi was shown to exert judgment it was not good judgment.

The lack of organic components should make the hacker angel's trick a no go pretty much from the start, and unlike with an organic system they can simply shut it down, wipe it, and reload from backup while containing damage with use of a decentralized network.

If for some reason they insisted on a true AI, despite not using or truly needing such capability, it would have a “female” personality and icon that would kind of, sort of, not exactly get romantically involved with one of the pilots, eventually.

This can be defended with how mecha anime/manga handle the female mad scientist verse the male one if anyone wishes to quibble.

The older Akagi would not have suicided in response to Rei if male. These leaves two options:

Classic path:
The older Akagi fakes his death, and goes into hiding to develop the Grand EVA while engaging in subversive activity towards SEELE. He’d probably show up sometime around the EoE equivalent in this much more advanced mech to save the day.

Quasi-canon path:
The older Akagi sticks around leading to the younger one not having to try to take up the slack of his own initiative. This leads a better and more thorough design of the EVA units which will not have catastrophic failures in systems that should be fail-safe every other time they go out. It should also lead to a much more comprehensive load out approach.

Actually there is reason to suspect that a purely technological computer that would not have to be convinced would be taken over by the infiltrating angel quicker.

Don't forget it's form was in effect new circuit paths. If there wasn't a consciousness to fight it you end up with the old cliché of what happens with a computer or any machine when combined with an intelligence. The intelligence gains full control above and beyond normal users.

Just where was there a personality fighting back? When they detected its infiltration instantly and it took over the cyber brains from the organic test type EVA equipment like nothing? It started out as a fungus type stuff and jumped from one _organic_ system to another quickly and easily assimilating them, Test EVA to Magi.

It was stopped by a simple series of commands entered by Ritsuko manually on a keyboard into the system, and reversed the infiltration by glorified antivirus software. Hardly the new circuit forming, defense evading creature you portray. Given they knew the instant it invaded the system, what it was, and how far it got you want to justify how it was the hardware as opposed to the organic side of things that was the more vulnerable? If half the effort spent to make the cyber brain boxes work was spent on the coding why wouldn't the Supercomputer be able to do what Ritsuko did both independently and faster for that matter?

EDIT:
Actually first you'd actually have to establish a baseline the Magi are MMEs with will. Given you have one kind of, sort of, not really incident with Ritsuko going off the deep end who could have just been being delusional in more ways I would say your chances aren't good for that.

Now for what I find annoying but have to say in this case anyway. Watch the show.

It shows it in the show and as for the Eva the big reason why they get so afraid of Unit 01 is because it acts independently at times. They are intentionaly meant to be blank slates. Even the Whole Dummy Plug is designed to create a clone with a soul but no will to power the Eva. All that kept the Magi from agreeing to self destruct and hold out long enough for that coding to work was the personality imprinted on the minds. Please just watch again and pay attention this time.

They also showed free will in End of Evangelion. Ritsuko set them to self destruct, and stop instrumentality. One of the magi (casper, I think) rejected the order- as Ritsuko said, "How could you do this, mother- choosing him(Gendo) over me?!?"

Casparaz I think. Melchior is the other one I can remember easily.

This is a fun concept I wonder if it will become a fic and how things will go.
