Best way to Differentiate characters for my crack fic?

Postby Vahn » Thu Jul 10, 2014 9:53 pm

So I figure, I change the subject line instead of making a new one, recycling it so to speak.

So one of my editors noticed something while he was editing that crack fic, yes it's in editorial. He never read Warp Realities and to him, the way I show who's from the Warp Realities Universe and the Variation Universe was confusing and awkward.

For those that follow my Fic, Warp Realities, I have dropped Sailor from the Senshi names and simply called them Moon, Mars, Venus, Etc etc, now due to their power ups. While the Variation girls are still Sailor Senshi.

I figured that I could get away with calling the Usagi from Warp Realities, Moon Usagi or Moon-Usagi and Sailor Moon from Variation, Sailor Usagi or Sailor - Usagi. To show the difference.

So what I am asking I guess is, for those familiar with all three of my works, is there a better way you would suggest?

How is having fun with your imagination and playing with other ways scenes could play out possibly tacky?

So since I am writing a crack fic, Involving the meetings of girls from Warp, Lost and Found and Having a Wild Time. Do I make a new Fanfic story or post it as an omake in Variation Lost and Found?

I'd say put it separate unless you want it to be involved as part of the plot of one of the fics. Otherwise just a comment in the last chapter in the related fics commenting on its existence is probably all you really need just so people know when it came about in relation to the chapters without guessing.

Tacky? Not at all.. but if it is to be a parody or a omake, make sure note it as such, as a mix of those three need not be comedy oriented, since Ranma is reasonably powerful in all three.

Because it involves all of them, make it separate. Only way to insure readers of only one or two of the three would want to read it without having it connected potentially to a story they did not like.

Make sure to note right from the start where in each timeline this is occurring... or if it does not matter, denote that as well.

Also, you may want to note or otherwise state with clarity whether they will remember this adventure when it is over, as any such event as this would impact each of the respective stories.

Why ever would it be tacky?

Bumped it again to get it noticed :D

You could put a key saying how you are stating the differences at the start of the crack. You just need to be sure you stick with it all the way through for each character.

So something like

Warp Realities Senshi will be refereed to with their Planatery Names ex. Moon - Usagi Mars- Rei etc etc
Variation: Lost and found girls will be refereed to with the word 'Sailor' In front of their names: Ex Sailor Usagi, Sailor Rei

Also would it bet better if I just put it like Sailor-Usagi instead of just Sailor Usagi? or Usagi/ Sailor Moon and Usagi /Goddess Moon ?

Try to keep it as straight forward as possible. The fewer alternatives get worked in the easier it will be on the readers.

Hmmm, I got a suggestion that say use the numbering system when refering to them so...

"The first Usagi looked at the second Usagi and nodded."

instead of

"Moon Usagi looked at Sailor Usagi and nodded."

Trying to find the best possible way to make it sound right.

Numbers can be confusing. You have to ensure the same one remains the same number at all times. Just as with any other labeling. It must be completely consistent to have it work.

I can do that but I thought it might be a bit kinda cluttersome if I just keep calling them first and second.

Ugh... what a mess... how about something simpler: use a prefix or suffix code on the names... So...

Ranma from Warp Realities is Ranma|WR, Ranma from Lost and Found Variations is Ranma|LFV, Ranma from having a Wild time is Ranma|HAWT... for every name.

Rei|WR and Mars|WR are the same character, the difference is merely if transformed.

While I actually dislike seeing such codes, they would clarify things, and since they would be part of the name, and not a number, should be easier to deal with and figure out.
