I don't think the manga and anime differ too much on this specific point (a lot of surrounding details are different, and Cheb covered the anime version of those events), but I'm more certain about what I know of in the manga, so...
Before he regains his memory of his past life, he helps out because they share a common enemy, though he said straight-up that he could be the sailor senshi's enemy if they got in his way (because he's also looking for the Ginzuishou). It's probably also because of having an attraction to her (natural or otherwise, which can be argued), which is returned.
But as far as a
need, as in having little choice? I would have to say mostly no. He can sense when she calls out to him or when she's in danger, but it's by his choice and not hers that he arrives. (He can teleport to her
and be transformed instantly.) Of course, if you consider morality and/or love as a controlling influence, then I guess his actions are mandatory. ;p
