Need Some Translations

Postby SpaceKnight of Chaos » Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:33 am

I am working on an AU Ranma fanfic and recently I've put together some new techniques to display in it. However, I don't speak a word of Japanese myself, so I was wondering if anyone here could tell me what the Japanese names for these techniques would be?

*Poison Fist
*Gentle Illumination
*Blinding Flash
*Light Ray
Blades of Light
*Solar Blast
*Fire Wall Escape
*Raining Fire
*Rolling Mortar
*Fire Windmill Strike
*Inferno Rush
*Blazing Haze
*Ignite
*Suffocate
*Inferno Touch
*Devil Magnum
*Earthquake Punch
*Stone Breaker Punch
*Shockwave
*Seeker Wave
*Avalanche Charge
*Steady As The Mountain
*Elemental Shield of the Earth - Grounding
*Elemental Guard of the Cliff - Anchor
*Badlander
*Stubborn as Mountain
*Tough as Rock
*Threads of Diamond
*Sight of the Land
*Earth Punisher
*Stone Web
*Desert Summoning
Water, water, everywhere, and all was cursed and black!
Drowned ones cast bad spell and out come pig, girl, duck, panda!
Swirl, swirl, slithery pond, and join with magic spring!
Swirl, swirl, dirty pond, and rid the cursed sting!
Here my prayer, I beg you please!
Now turn these curses BACK!

Actually I'm in a similar situation. A better question might be does anyone know any good sites that can translate simple sentences for attacks?

I'd have suggested babblefish if it gave the results in romaji but I don't know a site that does that. So you could probably get a translation but still not be able to read it to tell if it's good at all anyway.

You could use a Japanese to English/English to Japanese dictionary like the one here: http://www.freedict.com/onldict/jap.html or here: http://www.englishjapaneseonlinedictionary.com/

Though the results are not perfect.

A better site is

http://www.animelab.com/anime.manga/dictionary/

You still have to sort through the results, and it uses the same database of words. But you can search English-Japanese, and Japanese-English by romaji, kana, and kanji. And it offers the results in a better form, as well as the ability to search by more exact or more fuzzy definition.

Poison fist: Dokuken 毒拳

The next one is harder. There are many words for 'gentle' in Japanese, all of which have much the same meanings and which sound different and use different kanji. I'd look it up, but right now my connection to the site is being unresponsive.

Anyone else having reservations about peppering a fic with alien sounding Japanese technique names?

I recall reading a fic where I had to constantly scroll down to the bottom where the translations were. An otherwise decent fic became unpleasant to read. Just a word of caution.
