Any particular Anime you felt was better dubbed than subbed?

Postby Metroidvania » Mon Mar 26, 2007 10:35 pm

Now, I'm NOT trying to get into the sub/dub overall debate. Authenticity and whatnot is not what I'm looking for.

However, I am looking for the mood, and how it was conveyed through the voice actors in Japanese versus (insert your language here)

I would point out that I'd like it that whoever else posts goes by actual personal knowledge, not just word of mouth, but I trust you all enough. :)

One big one for me was Witch Hunter Robin.

The english VA's seemed to better fit the characters and the mood much better than the Japanese, especially Amon's brooding, mostly silent self, and Robin's mostly emotionless perspective in the beginning of the series.

Yuck. I hate English dubbed anime. I tried several but I must say that English just isn't suited for anime. Most of the voices are horrible.
And that's the bottom line 'cause Dumbledork said so.

I prefer Tenchi Muyo!, Ranma 1/2 dubbed, and Bubblegum Crisis dubbed over they're subbed versions as I don't like some of their Japanese voices. I also have a (very) slight preference for the english dubbed version of .hack//signs but I also liked it subtitled and Sakura Wars depends on which series (the OVA's and movie I liked dubbed but had to watch the TV series subtitled).

I tried watching Marmalade Boy and MKR dubbed, they just completly choose the wrong voiced. In Marmalade boy the voices didn't seem mature enough for the characters, and in MKR, the voices were just...annoying.

Ranma½ wasn't too bad a dub-job. Sucked they swapped VA somewhere at season 3 or 4 for the male Ranma...

Other anime I find pretty decently done dubbed (but moreso since I've never seen the sub to compare): Samurai Pizza Cats.

Slayers OVAs is of note - mainly because Naga's English voice actor has a more horrifying laugh than the Japanese one does. I DARE you to watch "The Scary Chimera Plan" in English without wincing during the scene with 10 Nagas in it.

Samurai Pizza Cats for being absolutely hilarious. The liberties taken by the dubbers with names and such just make it funnier.

Witch Hunter Robin for the same reasons as Vania.

Cowboy Bebop, I actually like the English VAs more than the Japanese VAs. They just seem to fit the characters better.

I find with Haibane Renmei that I can mix and match the two casts. Great jobs by both parties.

Full Metal Panic is done great in both languages.

Shinesman and El Hazard: The Magnificent World. Both were well done, and did not stick to the Japanese dialog. Instead, there were more jokes, and the jokes were funnier to an English-speaking audience.

Yeah, but you can't really use that logic. Yes, a lot of dubbed anime is horrible, but that doesn't mean it's /inherently/ bad.

Not anime, but I heard a bit of the game Brave Fencer Musashi in Japanese, and found the over the top voices worked better in English.

Always preferred the dubbed GITS:SAC, Sorcerer Hunters and Orphen… Just seemed to be more natural and catch the ambience and style of the anime better. Of course the subbed version of Orphen is appalling and trying to keep up with all that’s going on in the subbed version of GIT:SAC is a bit of a task too.

Sorcerer hunters, seemingly let the translators have fun. There’s a whole slew of gags that just aren’t in the subbed version. The story’s still the same but its different enough that you could almost watch it back to back dubbed then subbed… or vice versa or course.

Only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Usually prefer the sub

I knew I forgot something. GITS:SAC was very well dubbed IMHO. Unforutnately I can't comment about Sorcerer Hunters and Orphen as I've oly seen them dubbed (yes I liked the dubbed versions of both)

hmm...most of those choices I can agree with save Ranma and Tenchi

only two voices I felt worked in Ranma, Ted Cole's Kuno and the English VA for Ryoga, The second voice for male Ranma was decent but I couldn't stand to twin lady voices for Ranma Saotome.

Now Tenchi this one felt to me like someone grated there nails on a chalkboard.

Personally I *HATE* watching anime in Japanese... mostly because I don't know Japanese, and have a hard time following both the animation *AND* the subtitling. Trust me, I've tried watching anime Japanese VA subs for Ranma (Japanese onna-Ranma's voice makes me cringe), Excel Saga (though Excels voice makes me cringe in both English and Japanese), BigO (Roger Smith seems *MORE* dark and brooding in the Japanese VA), Tenchi (is an even bigger wuss in Japanese it seems), Hellsing (Alucard's VA makes him FAR to arrogant sounding), and probably some I'm forgetting.
Now I'm not saying that Japanese VA work with subs isn't all bad, often its the only way to see anime that's not yet released to the West yet... like Witchblade, Ah!MG season 2 everyone has wings, and the Hellsing Ultimate OVA's.
It's just that if I'm to watch anime, I much prefer it in English. Though it would be ideal if I could get anime in Deutsch... But it seems I can't for varying reasons... **seufz**

I have to agree about the Tenchi dubs. Most of the voices chosen were okay, if not perfect, but the voice for Ayeka? Sheesh. Everybody else talks in American accents, including her own sister, Sasami. Yet she has a cheesy fake British accent. What on Earth was the casting director thinking?

Poor Germany. Perhaps someday it'll get on the bandwagon and start translating more anime, like they do in the Mediterranian countries. In the meantime, you just have to make do with Perry Rhodan. ^_^
