Are there any decent anime-ish female gangsters?

Postby Metroidvania » Sun May 11, 2008 8:57 pm

I'm thinking of something similar to "My Wife is a Gangster" with Ranma. Although I'm not sure which way I'll have it go, I was curious as to if there are any real female gangsters in anime.

I know there's one of a schoolteacher who also happens to be the daughter of a crime boss or something to that nature, but I can't remember the name of it, or if there are any other convincing ones out there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much.

Black Lagoon
The head of the Russian Mafia in (the fictional city) of Roanapur in Thailand is Balalaika. She's a female VDV paratrooper from the Soviet Union. When the USSR fell she took her men and became freelance. Very competent, very ruthless.

That's the one that strikes my mind most.

Tokyo Crazy Paradise might fit the bill somewhat.

It's the year 2020 AD, and Tokyo II is a city infested with crime. Women can no longer go out in the streets alone without being victimized. Not wanting their daughter to suffer the same fate, Tsukasa Kozuki's cop parents raise her instead as a boy. When they are suddenly killed by one of the yakuza's in-fights, Tsukasa is left orphaned on the streets along with her three brothers. With no other options, she goes to the only person she can think of for help: pokerface Ryuji Shirogami, her classmate of 8 years and also the head leader of the powerful yakuza group, Kuryugumi. Ryuji, whose father was also a victim of the same yakuza fight, agrees to take her on as his personal bodyguard. As they set out to find their enemy, Ryuji slaps on an increasing amount of debt onto Tsukasa using all manners of ploys necessary to keep the reluctant Tsukasa by his side.

There's the main character (name escapes me at the moment) of Gokusen She's the granddaughter and prospective heir of a smallish yakuza group but generally prefers her day job as a school teacher.

Technically, Mireille Bouquet from Noir. Of course, the Bouquet crime family was wiped out when she was a little girl, leaving only two survivors (Mireille and her uncle Claude), so if you're talking about a fic with interactions between Ranma and criminal relatives, she's not really suitable.

You could always use Cheeky Angel. The main character Megumi isn't Yakuza, but she keeps getting mixed up with them. As a bonus, she ran afoul of a cursed book (instead of a cursed spring) and has a problem not unlike Ranma's. I've seen a crossover or two already.

Thanks for the replies, everybody.

I'm leaning towards Black Lagoon (can't believe I forgot about Balalaika) or Noir (didn't really consider it, odd) at the moment, but I'll post whatever I make when I get around to making it. In the meantime, keep posting if you can think of any.

Not exactly. Megumi is a girl full-time, who believes that she's a boy who has been cursed to be a girl. But the series is deliberately vague about that - there's an undercurrent that a real sex-change would have been too powerful a curse for the imp in the book to manage, and that the real curse is that she has always been a girl, but the imp has deluded her into thinking that she was originally a boy.

Dunno how good Cheeky Angel would be for a crossover; I was turned off in a major way by the ending in the anime version, so I'm probably not a good judge for it.

That's why I said "not unlike" instead of "the same as". They can empathize, but the situation and the cure are different. If there is a cure...

Say, wouldn't it be interesting to see how that wretched little imp dealt with Cologne, and vice-versa?

In Solty Rei, Rose Anderson, along with her brothers, are bandits, although you could make the arguement theat they are freedom fighters. Rose certainly is the most materialistic of the three and comes across the most as a thief.

Purely for comedic reasons, how about Seto San from Seto no Hanayome (The Bride from Seto)? Sure, she's a mermaid, but her parents are most definitely Yakuza. Mermaid Yakuza. Who return to their original merman form when splashed with water. The water hijinks alone would double by combining San and Ranma. Personality wise, San is mostly a normal likable girl unless you place her next to authority figures ("Don't take me in, Mr.Policeman!") or you get her started on honor and chivalry ("This is my path! Written as chivalry, read as mermaid!"). San, of course, is pretty much always shadowed by her overprotective mob boss dad and her foul-mouthed Sea-shell ninja bodyguard, among others. Leads to a lot of funny situations.

She's the only "gangster" character I can recall from a recent show. A great romantic comedy at that. However, if you're going with something serious in tone I'd probably steer away from Seto no Hanayome and go with Black Lagoon instead.
