Of course, you've got one little detail wrong. All of the Evangelions used in Tokyo-3 had female souls inside them. So they'd be channeling Joan Baez, Carol King, and Heart, instead of The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Steppenwolf. Maybe even a little Karen Carpenter?

Joan is good. as is Carole - which of their songs to choose though?

I seem to recall Joan Baez singing a cover of The Band's "The night they drove old Dixie down" with out changing the Virgil Caine's gender. And she did do a number of covers of Dylan's songs. so there is precedence

I can just see unit 01 sining You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman ( although in Sunshine's And If That Don't Work it could fit Shinju)

All I can think of from Heart at the moment is Dreamboat Annie and Magic Man - I can see Rei singing the last to Gendo (eww though)

There are no two-syllable city names that end with an "ay" sound, but there is a town called "Ie" (ee-ay). So you could have "I'd be safe and warm if I was in Ie. Okinawa dreamin' on such a winter's day."

Yeah, Joni Mitchell was noted for singing songs meant for male leads without changing the lyrics. What immediately pops into my mind is my "wtf" reaction I always had when hearing her singing "I was a free man in Paris"!

Heart made a lot of albums, so there are a great many songs to choose from, but I can easily picture Unit One singing "Barracuda" to Gendo. "You're lying so low in the weeds, I bet you're gonna ambush me. You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees, now wouldn't you, barracuda?"
