Doesn't this belong in the research category?

Probably. But this is DCG's thread, so it's up to him to move it if he wants to.

Nadesico
http://homepage.mac.com/tatara/nadesicops/index.html#
this second link has the nd series ships listed under the mecha entry for the popup window some under the prince of darkness heading. The names of the United Earth ships are there as well as a tidbit of info but dont have picture accompanyment.
Angel Links also has a few neat ships. The title ship in particular is nice for its different 'armor dress' unit things.
here
offers an image of the AL in standard and red dress (small pic) lower on the page. IIRC there are 3 or 4 dress types

David Gerrold's "Star Wolf" series of novels have a couple of interesting concepts, like the Liberty Ship-series of Alliance ships and the Morthan's primary battleship. He's fairly descriptive about the design of the Liberty ships.
If you can find them still, of course.

some more ship pics (r-type)

there were some enemies in the game that would qualify better due to their size (such as the ship you fly around in the city level, but i havent found pics of them yet)

Atomic Rockets website

For lots and oodles of realistic sci-fi rocket / space warfare goodness, visit the Atomic Rocket website, here: http://www.projectrho.com/rocketstub.html
It's very thorough, been continually updated with newly available information as long as I've been aware of it, and is in general a darn fun read. Also has lots of Rocketpunky early sci fi pictures. :-)
Luck,

Ragnarok from Final Fantasy VIII

The Asura or Arc D'Ciel from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's.
As someone else said, ships from the ship builder in Galactic Civilizations II (which I'm still wishing had multiplayer).

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Crest/Banner of the Stars yet. All the ship designs except for the missile ships are pretty good. Whats up with the huge pop up missile launchers?
Freespace and I-War have some nice ship designs.
For general modern and historical warship reference and looking up names Haze Gray is a great site.

There are three rules to Endings !
first: good always wins !
second: evil always returns !
third: the first one is not alway true ....

Old computer game called STARS had a whole lot of ship designs, it was kind of like civilizations in space.
I wuz gonna say babylon 5!
Star Fox? That had a weird shape to it tho.
Firefly's imperial battleships and such were nice.
