Oh, the Republic. If I lived in the North I could accept the UK label, but it really irritates me when foreigners assume the entire island of Ireland is a part of the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

I'm in "The North"... Slap bang between Manchester and Liverpool in the good old UK. So plenty of good going out spots and rail links

Their probably seperate because most people don't think of the UK when thinking of Europe. Most of us (well a good chunk) not really being into the "European dream".
That and the fact we're seen as much more closer to America in outlook.

There's a more practical reason. Most folks there in the UK speak the same language as we do. The rest of Europe doesn't. So it's to be expected that more forum members will come from the isles than from the mainland. That's a perfectly good reason why the UK should have its own listing...
...but the truth is probably that when he drew up the poll categories, he listed it separately without really thinking about it.
