Once upon a time, there were penguins in Iceland. That's what people called the Great Auk. When Antarctica was discovered, they found auk-like birds, which they also called penguins because of their similar appearance. No relation.

The Icelandic word for ‘penguin’ is ‘mörgæs’, meaning roughly ‘fat-goose’.
