Automated Pottery

Postby CRBWildcat » Fri Dec 15, 2017 2:39 pm

Came across this attempt at writing Harry Potter-related fiction by a "predictive-text keyboard", I think it's called. It's complete nonsense beyond the bounds of good taste, which effectively means that it's worth mentioning here in Spamville. 8)

I think I've seen worse, but then, that was machine poetry. In both cases, I gave up about ten lines in.

Now if you want real machine fiction, when I was in college and computers were enormous, I ran into Goldilocks and the Three Bears translated into COBOL. Perhaps it was FORTRAN - both are on the Wayback Machine. The text versions obviously were poor transcriptions of the photocopies of the mimeographed original; and if you look at the photocopies, you can see why the transcriptions were less than ideal. Still, the downloaded copies are rather legible, and illustrated as well. Here's the first of two pages; the second page needs to go through GIMP before appearing in public. Click to embiggen.

Nope, really not.

If you want some fun, try googling for some "AI chatbots" online, see if they can last even 10 lines without writing something strange or stupid.

“Dating is the opposite of tuna, salmon is the opposite of everything else. I’m sure you know what I mean,”

Oh... Oh dear
Did you know that in Russian "salmon a tuna" (the first one as a verb) is an "innocent" similarly sounding replacement for "suck a dick"?

Oh yes, oooh yeeees. I played around with one for a while just for fun, i even used some old chatlogs(between real people i mean) as basis for my side of a few conversations just to make sure it wasn't just my "contrariness" that was messing up the bot, but oh dear no, if anything it got even worse trying to deal with that.

I mean, really... Computers are based on logic, yet they can't even get those bots not to make epic logic fails so often it's just sad...

Yeah. So sad that it's hilarious. :)

Reading about this reminded me of the old ELIZA program and its variations. I had so much fun with that as a kid.
