Undertale

Postby Crescent Pulsar S » Mon Nov 16, 2015 10:24 pm

I just wanted to mention this game in case a certain someone hasn't heard about it, even though it's made a big splash. It's an RPG with "classic" graphics and a battle system that -- in addition to the traditional -- incorporates elements of (mild) danmaku and platforming, among other things here and there, along with an alternative option to fighting. I've seen/heard a lot of comparisons with Earthbound made, but mostly in superficial ways do I agree with that: it has a lot more depth and actively engages the player on an emotional level, and you can get a different experience depending on your choice of actions.

I said before that I wasn't going to get the game, but I didn't say anything about avoiding the music or Youtube footage of it. :)

That being said, I've had Bonetrousle in my head off and on for the past week. I'm considering making it my next Song of the Week.

You bonehead. You could have been a serial murderer.

By footage, is it too much to ask that it's from a Let's Play?

Could have been. Thankfully, I'm not. (Minor side note: some of the music on the soundtrack is sped up a bit compared to how it sounds in-game, for some reason or another.)

Yeah. I've been focusing on those who started off doing Pacifist runs of the game (for the most part). Need any links?

Also, the final boss for those runs uses attacks that are awfully familiar. :D

(Could be preference, or to avoid any claims to a copyright match, even if the holder of the copyright doesn't mind.)

If you're asking if I need a link, then no. I watched Steam Train play the pacifist route. (I like their choice of voices for Papyrus and Sans.)

By familiar attacks, are you referring to this?

(In answer to Lines #1-2: Ah. Alright.)

Nah, I've never played anything in the MOTHER series. (Never heard of Earthbound while I was growing up, oddly.) Undertale's creator has admitted before to being familiar with Touhou (amongst the first stuff he learned on the piano), so I have to wonder if he intended for there to be similarities to Marisa's attacks.

Ah, that. Yeah, I was kind of confused that Earthbound was a bigger reference point than Touhou, even though the similarities to the latter are far greater.

Okay, someone needs to make that an actual measurement.

It was worth a shot, I guess.

Anyway, from the maker of the last vid, here's Chara Vs Mettaton Neo.

I never said anything about avoiding fangames, either. >^_^< I took a jump through that loophole and gave Red a try, and... it was a bit of a thing. A bit stressful, but still a thing.

I think my biggest mistake was trying to play it at 1AM, when I was having trouble focusing and Red kept turning me into sashimi within her first few attacks. After two attempts I gave up, then tried again the next afternoon and managed to last all the way to the end of the Pacifist path (though I had to chew through most of the food in my inventory to manage it). The game met its end by deletion soon after.

While I was playing, a problem I've been having with the Touhou games recently made itself known. I've gotten rather hefty since I began playing (no relation) and I've been having trouble breathing off and on as a result, and I've needed to pay closer attention to my lungs during stressful moments to make sure I don't run out of breath at inopportune times. Needing to dodge attacks in the manner I was doing required my full attention, and after a couple turns against Red I was left hyperventilating.

(What it boils down to is that I really need to work on losing weight. :| )

those who started off doing Pacifist runs of the game

It allows for pacifist runs?
Now I will definitely buy it! :D
I still remember making a pacifist run in Fallout 2, with my "Kills" tab listing only the end boss (unavoidable) and some predatory animals too persistent for their own good.

Pacifist run is the fun way. If you go genocidal, you're gonna have a bad time.
