The only story I know of with that premise is Brian Drozd's fic Deification. The first three chapters and the teaser for the fourth are at his website: here.
If that is not the fic you are thinking of, I honestly have no idea what is. Unfortunately, that fic is very likely dead, as it hasn't been updated in at least four years.
