A lulz from naive and careless times

I don't know what made me remember this suddenly.

When I was a kid, our family went on a vacation (mom driving as always because if my dad with his temper ever got hold of a steering wheel it'd end with violence).
We stopped on a dam and dad went towards the power plant building to ask for directions.
He was gone for a long time.
When he returned... it's was what I think of when defining the English word "livid".
Why? Because he went through the entire power plant without encountering a soul, until he reached the control room, also devoid of people and wide open.

Imagine not just any dam but one on a river comparable to Mississippi, two kilometers wide, with the reservoir measured in tens of cubic kilometers.

Now imagine an empty control room accessible from the street

To the luck of everyone responsible, mom dissuaded him from driving straight to the city CPSU committee and reporting this with vengeance. Otherwise I suspect someone would have been hung by their tender parts.

Does remind of the story from a messenger many years ago...
He had a special delivery for the PM here. He went to the government building, and entered... And couldn't find anyone.
After running around in there for a while he finally found the right office, and put the letter on the PMs desk and figured that oh well, his job was done.

It was lunchtime.
So obviously, the government building was completely empty, and why ever would anyone lock any doors or anything.

Back in 1963 I was trying to get into the Cambridge Electron Accelerator. Nobody was in the front office, and nobody was answering the doorbell for the (locked) door. Well, I was supposed to start my first shift on one of the beamlines, and didn't want to be late on the first day. There was a delivery entrance down to the experimental floor. It had locked chain-link gates, but I was slim and athletic in those days. I could see people (including my faculty advisor) down in the experimental area, so the machine wasn't running. It was safe. I nipped up and over the gates and down where I was supposed to be.

My, there was a fuss. I wasn't supposed to DO that.

The BIG problem at the CEA happened, however, a couple years later. By then I was safe in Minnesota, for definitions of "safe" including mild radiation.
