How do you say "oasis" in Greek?

Postby Crescent Pulsar S » Mon Aug 21, 2017 4:33 pm

At one time I thought I had an audial pronunciation, but I can't seem to find it. Is "oh-ah-see" right? ;/

More of a silent "o"? Or no, more like a "th" sound instead of the "o". I think?

Old spelling:

Roughly same pronounciation if both sites are correct. And i think they are at least.

I dunno. To me, I hear the o. It might even be the stressed syllable. :?

I think it is o-ah-seh, but I could very well be wrong.

Yeah, except most of the time it sounds more like a soft "th" or even "f" sound instead of the "o". I've heard it for real and i've looked up several places online that have pronounciation for it and i STILL can't say for sure. Totally annoying.

the 'th' almost sounds like a artifact of the recording rather than part of the word itself.

In the google if you erase all the letters except the 'o' it does not pronounce it at all.

I studied Attic Greek in college and the pronunciation for omicron was "uh" as in 'but', unless at the beginning of a word where the rough breathing mark gave an h sound to a vowel. ho, he, ha
Oasis has a soft breathing mark, so no 'h' sound.

I haven't studied modern Greek, so I can't say if there's been a vowel shift.

Yeah, but happening on all six different recordings that i checked? And from what i can remember, the word DOES sound like that in reality as well(but it's too long since i heard the word for real to be certain).

Yeah, like i said, sort of silent "o", except not quite...

Quite annoying.

Yeah, but the word is imported from Egyptian, so it may have nonstandard pronounciation anyway.
And it sounds more like "ha" than "oa". Except of course it sounds more still like "fa" or "tha"...
The horrors of insufficient reference materials (would have been so much easier if it was about latin!). :P

I do not know how reliable the Wiktionary is, but it says the Greek pronunciation is ‘oasis’ or ‘óasis’.
