How to make your surroundings that little bit quieter.

Oh, that IS a good find. Despite most of it being essentially more or less "common sense", it's an easy source of lots of things that are oh so easy to not think of or just miss.

It was neither an e-book nor a manga, but I sent my great-nephews off to college with The Cartoon Guide to Physics by Larry Gonick. They were doubtful, but thanked me once they got back from their first year. Gonick also did statistics and calculus, plus many others.

My favorite was The Cartoon History of the Universe. That was not just one book -- it was a series. I don't know exactly how many - the numbers are confusing, but they go as high as 13. (I realize this is supposed to be about e-books. Some of these series [but not all] are available thusly for kindle.) Another wonderful 'comic' from that era was The Miller's Tale by Geoffrey Chaucer, translated into Hippie and illustrated by Gilbert Shelton. Whenever I can find a copy at a reasonable price I buy it and use it to gift to any theatricals I know at the time. It can be gotten as a CD at horrendous expense, or on the used-book market at somewhat less horrendous price.

Either this is a secondary module to another book, or the target group already has a grasp on the language. In the latter case, I am most emph excluded.

Edit: Three Army pamphlets, all about how to take care of this or that:

The Army decided, long ago, that comic books (or at least comic book format) was a good way to get things over to soldiers. They hired Will Eisner (a very good artist - the Eisner Awards are named after him) to do them. Manga hare not the only instructional comics! (Hell, I've even done instructional comics myself.)

I'm pretty sure the rifle maintenance booklet was done by Eisner, or at least his shop. The battery maintenance one was definitely not done by Eisner - the artist may have done work for Archie comics. The Gama Goat one, it's a tossup - whoever it was was trying for the Eisner style, but it's not the Real Thing.

I was told by Mort Weisinger (who was the editor of Superman at the time) that during WWII editions of Superman were published in Basic English, to help bring the less-literate recruits up to speed.

Behold the power of comics and manga!
