Sigh. Reminds me of the fact that I was learning German both in school and in the university. I then abandoned it because it was against my will -- i always wanted to be learning English instead -- but I still recognize some words and perceive the grammar structure of any phrase instinctively and immediately.
Still, Ich spreche Deutsch nicht.

Is there an interesting fanfic or two in German that would force me into using dictionaries to expand my vocabulary and finally make it take off...? I learned English by trying to read this: http://www.thekeep.org/~harnums/fanfic/ ... index.html until I succeeded.

Also, Russian railroads switched to microelectronics in its teleautomatics systems much later than European ones. Why? Because *any* such system had to be rated from minus 50 Celsius to plus 60 Celsius. But there were no computers or microchips rated for sub-zero.

I then abandoned it because it was against my will -- i always wanted to be learning English instead -- but I still recognize some words and perceive the grammar structure of any phrase instinctively and immediately.

Eh, even limited understanding tends to be useful. I can't say i ever worked hard in regards to German in school, since it was just a "3rd language", but it's still enough to read and speak a little, and it certainly helps with linguistic insights, which can be surprisingly useful.

Yeah, similar issues here even if not quite as extreme. My father was among other things involved in upgrading switches to ones that did not freeze up at the drop of a hat, whenever the weather wasn't perfect. And it was quite frankly insane how much work had to go into what you would expect to be a simple solution "just put a heating system in the switches and done" right?
Not even close.
Took many years to work out something reliable, and the wide temperature range was one of the things that messed everything up the most. Because of how Sweden is "tall" north to south, well, down south will rarely get below -20C, but up north, below -40C isn't impossible, so unless you want to pay the extra to have multiple variants produced in far too small numbers, you need something that works everywhere.
Also, because we often get winds coming in from across Norway from the Atlantic, it's not just the cold temperature that is a problem, we often get cold and WET, which can mess things up even worse.
