hmm I actually see what your getting at, the idea Youma are either originally humans, or similar enough to have some form of relation to humans. It could be that youma are similar to the shadows from Persona 5. (as I've been playing through said game) byproducts of distorted human desires that manifest themselves or some type of similar byproduct of the human soul.

They're monsters, demons, evil spirits who feed on humans, etc.

Does it? The basic "life energy" concept is so vague that there's nothing saying it must be specific to species.
