Ranma World Building

One of the things that I find so interesting about Ranma Universe is how open ended it is, which is why I think there are so many fanfics for it. As well as why I am such a fan of the Alterverse series as well as The Dark Lord of Nerima I how they build upon the universe.

However there are still so many questions left to answer, and even more come up when you get more into manga. To start off the huge number of exotic martial arts. Most are just family school that when you think about it are a lot like the monsters from One-Punch Man. Your really good at eating Martial Arts Dining, Tea Ceremony Martial Arts Tea Ceremony. However a few are legitimate sports like Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics, Martial Arts Cheerleading, Martial Arts Takeout. Are these strictly a Nerima think or there national level competitions. Is this strictly a high school level even or can you fight professionally? Are there other sports related martial arts.

From what I’ve learned from any manga that involves wrestling, wrestling in Japan is pretty much this already but the Ultimate Fighters Federation from Gold Diggers is pretty much MMA with wrestling type personas and acing, but they still fight for real.

Close your eyes and randomly point and you’ll find a manga with a highschool where knowing how to fight is a must what about higher level educational institutes. This is not something you see as often there’s Reinan University and Musashino Budou University from Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru as well as Ryobu University from AIKI.

Simply because no one can stop them martial artist in Nerima get away with a lot. Wanton destruction, theft, molestation, tolerance is pretty high, but when things go to far are they thrown in regular jail with the hope that they just don’t break out or are jails specifically designed for them.

What about outside of Asia, while we have Martial Arts Dining I’ve always super powered martial arts was an eastern thing. While it’s possible for westerners to gain super strength and speed, that’s the result of them starting to train young enough that they don’t develop limiters then reinforcing the body so it doesn’t destroy itself. But things like ki blast, battle auras, ect were a strictly an eastern thing. The west relies more on science and mytaphysics (psychics superpowers).

That leads to another question how technically advanced is the Ranma universe. Given that Gosunkugi can do things like buy power armor from a magazine advanced technology is an easy thing to come by.

Magic is also seems to be an easy to find commodity its only limit seems to be the persons talent in using it.

This is also why there are so many crossovers it’s real easy to piece the missing pieces together between two different series where at most all you have to do is change a few details. And that’s not even going into alternate universes.

What’s the story behind the orochi is Shinnosuke’s last name Kusanagi.

Fighting games like KOF, Street Fighters, ect, or the various series tournament arc are ways to mainstream high level martial arts around the world.

Martial arts and craft can be further expanded on.
Martial Arts Calligraphy might be the most powerful style in the series, between Onmyoudo, power tattoos, using art as a weapon.

On more intimate levels you can go into further details of the characters lives. Ranma and Genma were in China for at least a year yet we only know that they went to the Bayankala Mountain range.

I’m currently reading the manga Kenji. There are a lot of interesting places that Genma would have taken Ranma.

People who illegally crossed the broader from mainland china to hong kong are really suffering. For them the only opportunity is hong kong’s movie world. For those who live in the city martial arts is for staying alive. For the less fortunate people who live in hong kong. The only chance is to become a movie actor.

Cangzhou sas always been called the Escape Ground. It means the land where fugitives stay. Many convicts, such as bandit leaders or political detainees, escape to this region. This also includes soldiers who lost in the war. Many people in cangzhou try to make a career out of martial arts. Since a long time ago, famous warriors that are known all over china are mostly from cangzhou. For example Li shu wen. Despite that martial artist that are lucky enough to become a martial arts instructor in the city or for the military, or a bodyguard for the rich are few and far between. As the birthplace of martial arts there are many different sorts of kung fu in cangzhou. All of them are competing against each other to claim martial superiority. In cangzhou if you defeat a student the rest of them will challenge you in order to protect the school’s name. Challenging a member of a dojo could cause you to have to fight against the whole school

The meng village where Bajiquan was supposedly founded.

Has Ranma met a member of the Meng family.

I doubt they would be ONLY Nerima. National level competitions though, hmm, i would guess not, but only barely.
And didn't Ryoga learn Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics elsewhere?

Is this strictly a high school level even or can you fight professionally?

When competition exists at one level, it probably exists on others as well.

That leads to another question how technically advanced is the Ranma universe. Given that Gosunkugi can do things like buy power armor from a magazine advanced technology is an easy thing to come by.

We never see any evidence of COMMON use of stuff like that, meaning that it is probably inconvenient/expensive/difficult to use/overly complex to maintain/etc, so, the outer edge of tech is clearly much higher than the real world at the same time, but it appears to be experimental level rather than "normal" tech level. The normal tech level is still probably a bit ahead, but more like 10-20 years, maybe.

Magic is also seems to be an easy to find commodity its only limit seems to be the persons talent in using it.

People in general are clearly more or less unaware of magic, meaning that it cannot be a common and "easy to find commodity", but it is clearly there and findable if you know where to look.
Also, we see a lot of "ancient treasure" kind of items, but not much "i'll just pop over and buy one"/"mailorder one" things.
Most is also one-off artifacts, once its gone its gone.

So, it's definitely there in the background and there's a fair number of people knowing more about magic than average, but actual magic users and enchanters seem to be rare.
Also, with how weird most items are, together with the apparent nonexistence of simpler/more useful items, magic is likely very much art rather than science and may also be unpredictable or even unreliable(although effects seems to be fairly reliable, that could be a matter of being magic items) or temperamental.

If it's an unpredictable art, then the magic items could be the result of enchanters experimenting until they come up with something that they CAN sell(because trying to make something more specific and useful simply takes too much effort), which would allow for the disjointedness from the presence of so many weird things, yet nothing simpler or more commonly useful.
