Ranma academics

Making thread for how Ranma ranks against his peers academically due to discussion in the polls forum: viewtopic.php?f=64&t=7315&p=422065#p422065

Based off the raw japanese manga, we have:
Akane: ま-ま-, がわ (Maa Maa Ga Wa)
Ranma: 結構, い-じやね-か (Kekkou ii Jya nee ka)
Genma: 世界に, 発表できる, 点数かつ (Sekaini happyou dekiru tensuu katsu)

Going off the translations and noting that I'm not a japanese expert, I see this blind idiot setup of words:
Akane: Well Well, Congratulations me.
Ranma: No problem/wonderful, It's good right?
Genma: World/Society, Publication/Announcement can do, points/score scold

Using that and some less blind idiot translating, I finally come to this translation for the text:
Akane: Well, well... I did good.
Ranma: I was worried for nothing. I did pretty good, huh?
Genma: Not good enough to broadcast to the whole world! (Slap to the back of Ranma's head)

There's also the times we see Ranma studying or reading in his spare time along with the fact that he doesn't normally sleep in any of the classroom scenes he's a part of.

All in all, I would characterize Ranma as average/above average academically and concerned about having bad grades reflecting badly on him.

Ranms' education I know has been discussed here before in the past, but whatever. In any case he has to be smarter than he seems...

Despite the training trip and the presumed tons of scholing he had to miss because of it, and despite being under genma's guardianship, we've seen he was in school at least two differing points (Jr. High flashbackbacks with Ryoga, and high school with Akane) with people of approximately the same age, and same grade.

Does that make him a genius... probably not.

Not do doubt your translations but Akane isn't saying she did good but 'so so' She's not using the kanji for 'ga' which does mean congratulations, so 'ga' is being used to indicate herself. 'Wa' is just a female sentence ender.

Ranma's appears correct but is a bit too flowery. "I did great, right?"

Genma's literal.
The world, announce permit, score 'scold'.

Scold is a poor translation though since it's based on a whole zen thing between master/student.

Your translation doesn't seem wrong but from a western perspective carries a different implication. I had it translated before by someone much better and more familiar with the cultural aspects and he put it that it was Genma scolding Ranma for his pride/ego.

There's also the times we see Ranma studying

Manga only again?

or reading in his spare time

That says nothing about his academic abilities. It would only give actual info on it if we either saw him reading lots of stuff that should be above his educational level, or for a negative outlook if he was noticed as... let´s say reading comics by only looking at the pictures.

All in all, I would characterize Ranma as average/above average academically and concerned about having bad grades reflecting badly on him.

He states in grand manner that test scores is completely useless to him... Blatant lack of interest.
It´s repeatedly inferred that he´s (far) behind Akane and some teachers treat him somewhat like a yankee(ie someone who doesn´t care about grades or is only there to sit things out).
Again yes, i rely on anime mostly, but now also the chapter you linked to in the other thread and a little more of the manga.

And the way he instantly assumes the principal is correct about his "horrible" scores shows that he thinks he has reason to believe such to be for real, this rather clearly shows that he is probably used to NOT getting good scores but apparently doesn´t care much if his usual scores would be shown, because test scores doesn´t really matter.
If he didn´t think his scores could be so dreadfully low(if he was in any way used to getting good scores), then he would have called Kuno a liar or some such instead of suddenly becoming scared about it.
If he truly cared about getting high scores, he would never say the very opposite.

Even if relying only on the linked manga chapter, i have a very hard time seeing how you can peg him as an above average student...

Oh i would say he seems pretty smart, no idiot would be able to fight like he does or copy/improve other peoples moves like he does. However, smart does not automatically have any direct connection with his ability as a student.
And i have a very hard time seeing him as a good student.

You really should look into it.

He states in grand manner that test scores is completely useless to him... Blatant lack of interest.

And then when it might make him look stupid he freaks out and tries to get the test back. Sure that's blatantly uninterested.... he didn't care at all that he might look stupid in front of others. Ego/Pride monster Ranma doesn't care about public image or the possibility to be superior over others....

It´s repeatedly inferred that he´s (far) behind Akane and some teachers treat him somewhat like a yankee(ie someone who doesn´t care about grades or is only there to sit things out).

In the shit anime maybe. There's no implication that Akane is better than him in the manga at... anything. That's almost a running joke that Ranma is better than her in any pursuit. Ranma is consistently one of the more clever and wordly characters in the manga. He's not treated any differently by the teachers and will even pick studying with Hinako over continuing to fight her. The few times where Ranma goofs off in class are when ALL students are goofing off in class.

If Ranma got consistently bad grades he wouldn't care about one more so for him to have any concern indicates that he does not get bad grades with any regularity. There's no reason for him to care unless it's something out of the ordinary.

Ranma's immediate reaction isn't to assume the principal is correct, he immediately dismisses him. Even good students can bomb a test so there's no way he can be 100% confident in calling Kuno a liar.

Considering Ranma's extremely quick mind and ability to nearly instantly figure out problems put before him and lacking anything definitive to the contrary, it would be silly to assume he's less than an average student.

Something just occurred to me about that chapter. If the anime made such a huge deal of portraying Ranma as a moron, it could be one big joke by Rumiko about the differences between the two portrayals. Although to look at the times when it was coming out and where the anime was at would require too much research into the anime for me to care.

It's funny. In the anime, Ranma is a student who doesn't care at all and has bad handwriting that sleeps a lot.

In the manga, he breezes through things, corrects teachers, and is a very good student.

I think it was to give Ranma more sympathy. Or try to rationalize his stupid moments.

In the anime, everyone is more sympathetic except Akane. In the manga, Akane gets sympathy and everyone else is a bigger jerk than the anime.

A lot of Ranma's manipulations and smart points aren't shown in the anime. Thus, if you watch the anime only, he seems so stupid. But in the manga he's less stupid and more prideful honor before reason jerk.
"Oh no! What haz happened? As you cats would say." Akane asked, horrified.

"Cats do not speak that way!" Luna yelled.

That is a very bad assumption.
Practical smart and theory smart are two extremely different things. My friend and i are excellent examples, he´s superb at practical stuff, i excel at theoreticals. In school, i read things through once, at most and still scored higher than him, despite him spending a lot of hours studying.
But, if it´s a matter of figuring out how to do something practical, like how he turned some simple stuff into a push-to ignite part for homemade pyrotechnics(i would never even have come up with the idea) or his sabot-style projectile for our air rifles( ), he´s totally and utterly brilliant in a way i simply cannot match.

If we play strategy games together, if i handle the overall strategy and he handles actual ops, well we´ve never lost against anyone ever like that. But run it the other way around and it just becomes embarassing how much worse things go oh so quickly.

In short, talent as well as intelligence comes in many shapes. There´s nothing at all preventing someone to have insanely good spatial and kinesthetic IQ, as Ranma probably does, and still have crap IQ in all other categories.

Something just occurred to me about that chapter. If the anime made such a huge deal of portraying Ranma as a moron

NOT a "moron". Noone ever said that.
And a genius can be a bad student just as a moron can be a good student.

Thus, if you watch the anime only, he seems so stupid.

I wouldn´t call him stupid. But i would certainly not call him a highend student.

I should note there is also the incident with Ryoga... Rygoa had to study really hard to be able to just attempt to pass the high school entrance exam... it is never brought up that Ranma obviously did not have to do so.

Of course, this only proves, if anything, that Ranma is smarter than Ryoga.

... That needed proving? I'd give a rock a test to compare against Ryouga's finely honed intellect, but most human beings just win a free pass without egregious evidence to the contrary.
There is no problem that cannot be solved through the proper application of immense levels of firepower.
