One Piece anime should stop dragging out story arcs

I love One Piece. I've been watching anime since 1979 and reading manga since 1992, and One Piece is probably one of my favourite series ever. I still like the manga but I've come to really dislike the anime for dragging out the story lines. I get it, the manga doesn't advance fast enough and the anime has to pay attention not to catch up to the manga chapters. However, adding more and more unnecessary épisodes isn't the right solution, and hasn't been for décades.

The first anime I really came to hate for this was DBZ back in the early 90s. God, how I hated those épisodes where they were launching a Kemehameha for a whole 3 épisodes and the time it took for Namek to finally explode after Freeza destroyed the cre of the planet.

The One Piece anime should simply stop production after each story arc and start again after a new one is finished in the manga.

Oh SO agreed.

So long as currency is a thing, and thus greed, fillers and drawing out storylines aren't going to go away.

That's the thing though, greed should make them do it in a better way, because horrid fillers are literally kicking people HARD away from a lot of fandoms.

I've stopped watching the anime a few months ago since it's dragging everything out sooooo much. These long fights are just so booooring and no one wants that. Take the fight against that biscuit guy. That lasted at least for 5-6 episodes I think. I'm sick of it, especially since all of the long anime series do it.

It's not what they should do, but what they can get away with. There's no real need to take the time and money for quality when enough of your audience is lacking certain faculties in the brain department. If given a choice, they'll aim to get the most money relative to how little time and effort it takes. And since time is money, naturally you don't want to wait to produce the goods, and if they have to make new material that just means making additional money outside of the bounds of the source material.

Well, I've read somewhere on the internet that the anime is losing a lot of audience, but I guess they don't really care because I think that they make a lot more money with the merchandising then they do with either the manga or the anime. I don't even want to think about the amount of money I've already spent on One Piece figures. I have more than 60 or 70 so far and no intention of stopping collecting them.

On the one hand, i'm more than cynical enough to agree with you. OTOH, producing anime is still not exactly cheap, it is in fact far cheaper to let a writer come up with something decent, than it is to animate 5 extra episodes of a single fight that everybody hates anyway.
And which gives you the bigger fanbase? 1 epic fight episode followed by 1-2 episodes of wellwritten filler(it exists, i promise, i have seen some!), or 6 episodes of a fight that is so ridiculously drawn out and using so much stock footage and other crappy costsavers that it almost becomes hilariously bad?

Thing is, it's actually relatively cheap to get decent fillers written, but it's expensive to make the episodes, so why insist on making LOTS of obscenely crappy fillers?

Anyway, what they probably should do, is to have every team working on longrunning unfinished manga to anime productions, to double up on projects, and then alternate between seasons which anime they're making. It's not a perfect solution but it would be dramatically better than how it's done now.

Yeah. I was already tempted to quit after the long fight against Doflamingo, but I didn't at that moment. But from now on I'm sticking to the manga and maybe the animated movies.

Stopping then restarting production carries a tremendous cost. It's not a conveyor belt with robotic assembly, it's a team of artists and voice actors who'd have to switch jobs. Instead of staying on the job for years and keeping the team trained and used for OP, some may move on with their lives, it could take time for them to get used to OP again and so on.

That's what I'm getting at. Just about anyone in that well-oiled machine that is the Japanese animation business should have a good idea of where their cost/profit line is drawn. The chances of them going out of their way for something that's likely to be disliked, without expecting to profit from it, should be really, really low.

Yeah, but it seems to have become a "standard procedure" kind of culture. :(

As I said before, it's most likely like that time when USA DOD ordered a couple very expensive submarines they didn't really need -- several billions each -- just to keep the production line from going stale and irreplaceable specialists from going away.

I believe this kind of expense is called "upkeep".

Oh sure, it probably is. But they COULD easily do it BETTER, and still spend less. It's just so daft.

Humanity is daft. I feel like I can't go a day without seeing or hearing at least one thing in the world where someone or some people have done or are doing something daft. :?
