And heck, here is the end of the last scene that's currently written for "On Hero Own Episode 07: Three Dates"... which might fit in here.
Ranma fidgeted while waiting for Kasumi to come down the stairs. She adjusted her long skirt again, though it really didn't need it. She looked up to see Kasumi, clad in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Ranma-type clothes. Ranma fiddled with the green silk bow in her hair. Their attempts to put the other at ease only resulted in...
Then she looked into Kasumi's eyes, and saw thanks for her efforts on the older girl's behalf. Wordlessly, those windows to Ranma's soul returned the gratitude in at least equal measure. Suddenly the clothes didn't matter, just the person inside.
The two of them walked together through Nerima's streets. Kasumi with her hands folded before her and Ranma with her arms at her side. Conversation flowed from the weather to plans for their business. Talk danced around the issue of feelings for each other neither was really comfortable with.
Finally they stopped, as Ranma sniffed an invitingly familiar scent in the air. "Ucchan's," She said with a smile. Looking up, she saw the sign for the minor culinary landmark two doors down. "Want some okonomiyaki?" Ranma asked as she looked up at the taller girl.
"Of course, Ranma-san." Kasumi stiffly replied.
Ranma's smile drooped as she looked up at her friend. "Okay, I'm paying!"
As they came to the door, Kasumi reached out and opened the door for a furiously blushing Ranma. "Thanks!" She said with a bow as she entered, Kasumi following.
"Hey, li'l sis, it’s the big date night, huh?" Ukyou said with a huge smile from her cook's station.
"Yep!" Ranma replied with a slight flush Kasumi shared.
The proprietor motioned the two young women to a table in a corner of her shop where they might get a little privacy. "Have a great time, you two. Good luck, Ran-chan!" Ukyou said with a wink after seating both guests.
"Thank you Ukyou-san!" Kasumi said as Ukyou went back to her place at the griddle.
"My pleasure, sugar!" the chef replied with a wink and a thumbs up to Kasumi.
"So... uh... here we are." Ranma opened, after Ukyou's attention returned to cooking.
"Yes, Ranma-san. I'm glad to spend a little time away from the house." Concern crossed her face for a moment, "But I wonder how Nabiki, Akane, and Father will be able to eat tonight?"
"Easy. Nabiki’ll probably go out and buy a bag of those burgers she likes." Ranma fought off a smile as she remembered the meal they had shared at the park. "Heck, they aren't half bad... for American food. Sakura-chan sure.. ." Ranma smiled for her companion's benefit as she finished, until she thought of her absent daughter, wilting her expression a little.
Kasumi noticed. "Ranma-san, you know how excited Sakura-chan was about you spending some time with each of us..." She exhaled a bit of disappointment, quickly hidden but noticed by Ranma. "But if you want to..."
Ranma shook her head then looked into Kasumi's eyes. "No, Kasumi-san. I know she wanted us to have a good time, it's just that..." Ranma broke off. Sakura had been a part of her other two 'dates', but had insisted Kasumi and Ranma go it alone.
"You need to let go a bit, Ranma-san. I know. When I see Akane or Nabiki I still see a crying little girl who had lost her mommy look up at me..." She closed her eyes, as a tear squeezed out from each corner of her eyelids. The touch of two small hands over hers pulled her eyes open to see tears dancing in Ranma's eyes as well.
"I understand, Kasumi. I understand how you feel, and I understand you. Being a mother... It's not something I ever would have asked for... It's changed my life forever... But, heck, it's the best thing that's ever happened to me too."
Kasumi flushed, as she quickly withdrew her hands to fold them in her lap. "Yes, Ranma-san. That's exactly it. In fact..."
"Heeeere's dinner!" Ukyou almost shouted as she thrust a super-special in front of Ranma and a shrimp okonomiyaki before Kasumi.
"Thanks, Ucchan. Smells great!" Ranma said as she prepared to attack the plate before her. She looked at Kasumi, who was politely waiting for her to eat first. "Kasumi-san, right now, maybe forever, I'm a girl so... I think we can eat at the same time." She noticed Kasumi still hadn't moved. "Okay, then YOU eat first."
"B... but. If this is a date you should..."
Ranma reached under the table to find Kasumi's folded hands, gently placing her own on top. "Kasumi-san, lets not pretend this is more than it is. Tonight, I just asked one of my best friends to dinner. Right now, I'm a girl just like you, and I want to eat... okay?" Ranma's stomach added its preference with a growl. Ranma reddened at one thing she couldn't keep under control.
Kasumi flushed even more furiously in response.
Suddenly, Ranma felt her hands thrust aside as the taller girl rose from the table. "Kasumi!" She whispered, "please... don't!" Ranma stood, looking up into Kasumi's eyes. She wasn't sure how she felt, or how to feel. Confusion, anger, and sadness were among the myriad emotions that warred beneath her distressed visage.
Kasumi blinked stinging tears from her own eyes as she realized the pain internal struggle had caused her dinner companion. Picking a napkin up off the table, she daubed her eyes; then leaned down to dry her date's tears.
Hope came alive again as Kasumi dried Ranma's face. Then, the smaller girl felt a larger pair of arms engulf and embrace her. In a natural motion, Ranma buried her face in the other woman's chest. And she cried. Her voce was muffled as it spoke for her heart, "Kasumi-san... Why I want... I don't know what I want."
Kasumi tried to comfort the young woman. "Ranma-chan. I'm so sorry I doubted my heart... I doubted you... It's all right. Everything will be all right..." For once, artifice failed her. The mask that protected a nine-year-old confronted with an adult life fell away, revealing a torn young woman. "I hope." She whispered after a few questioning seconds.
Ranma looked into Kasumi's eyes again, seeing confusion mirroring what she felt, "Kasumi-san, really, it's not impor.. ."
Showers were clearing in Kasumi's forecast as she responded, "You're right, half-right, Ranma-chan. If all it takes to have a nice dinner with you is sample this wonderful food first, I think I can make the sacrifice."
Ranma beamed as Kasumi took her seat again, "Well, " She asked confusion giving way to puzzled, though tearful, merriment.
"I at least would want my date to make herself comfortable before I start eating, okay?" Kasumi replied with a touch of her own bemused sorrow.
With that, the two young mothers finally started dinner.
After Kasumi had the first bite.
Ranma smiled, "Was it that bad, Kasumi-san?"
"Not, it wasn't Ranma-chan,' the older girl replied, with a thoughtful look.
