What kind of stone would a large Buddha be made of?

I don't think its any type of stone in particular. Essentially whatever the artist had in sufficient size.

In Japan, Buddha statues are usually made of wood or metal. Usuki's statues are a rarity and the only stone Buddhas in Japan to be designated as national treasures.

They are carved from highly workable, soft, volcanic rock from nearby Mount Aso.

Stone definitely seems to be less common. And finding any mentions of specific types of stone is stupidly hard.
