In today's case, What If Usagi were introduced to modern, twenty-eleven computer and mobile technology?


Would she be adicted to facebook? (And/or Farmville?) Would Princess Bunny of the Moon be a hopeless texting romantic, always texting her Endymion when she's not with him? Would she be a WoWcrafter? A Minecrafter? Or would she torrent endless streams of sappy love stories from the internet? What do YOU think? Technology is not just for geeks like Ami anymore.

I'd see her joining a million other girls on the internet -- social networking, farmville, twilight (urrrrggh), latest cellphone (or whining to her parents to get her the latest cellphone), at least once copy-pasting wikipedia and trying to pass that off as a term paper, at _least_ one handheld. She won't be a Konata and play _that_ much WoW, but she will be familiar with what goes on in it. Occasional yaoi in her HD.

Were Usagi actually able to use a computer, and want to do so, in modern times... I could see her on social networking, and Youtube... but not much else... Perhaps a groupie on rock band sites (like the 3 lights, or likely modern alternative category artists (or whatever that category goes by these days)).

Well, Minako would definitely be a social busybody with a modern cellphone, tweeting, blogging, Facebooking and following the various celebrity scenes, and I don't consider Usagi as being much different, if only by a matter of a degree or two here or there. I'm not sure if she'd really devote herself to an MMORPG, though, since it'd really cut into her relations with her friends (the other sailor senshi, I mean), since most of them wouldn't have the same interest. Although, if they had an MMORPG of the sailor senshi, I can see them all playing it out of general amusement, some after a bit of convincing.

If Mamoru were to attend a college/university (I don't know the difference) that separates them to the extent that they can't visit each other physically, I don't think that she'd bother him overly much with texts and such. She seemed fairly mature about sending him letters when she thought he was in America, so, aside from times when a particular mood strikes her (because we know it will), steady E-mail and phone calls will probably be preferred to texting and chatting. I think so, anyway.

The Senshi don't need an MMORPG - they live in an MMORPG. Things might be different if the Mercury Computer could stream training simulation scenarios to the cellphones, though.

Feh. The minimum encryption she'll be using is a seeded TT800 PRNG XORing under triple-DES. For the pr0n, I expect a seeded Mersenne Twister PRNG XORing under AES or Camellia and a pseudo-random number of bits preceding the data.

Texting on the phone like so many in her age group. Wants an ICQ app, too. Not Facebook. Ami wouldn't let her, what with security holes any FSX pilot could fly a real 747 through. It'll be MizuSoft's WaterFriends, which will incidentally be the rage among Japanese teens. The phone app will do everything they want and more in less than 550K of memory, leaving plenty of space for J-pop, cute pix and ringtones.

I'd guess quite a bit since I've seen that some shinto shrines advertise free wi-fi and others like Kanda-Myojin Shinto shrine that is within walking distance of Akihabara bless gadgets with a plaque designed to emulate a microchip in appearance.

For that matter, how common is it for teenagers in Japan to own their own laptops, etc?

Japan is one of the, if not the, most tech heavy countries in the world. While I'm not sure the percentage of teens that have their own laptops in Japan the percentage that owns cell phones is higher than 90 percent and I would guess the percentage that owns lap tops would similarly be very high.
