Is rock music a dying breed?

Postby Crescent Pulsar R » Wed Aug 10, 2011 6:38 pm

I don't go out of my way to listen to whatever new music is playing these days, and it's always been like that for me. However, whenever a new band became popular enough, even someone like me would eventually hear about it. Even then, most of the time it wasn't a rock band. It seems that the only rock music I hear about are from bands that are twenty, thirty or even forty years old, and half the time it's about one of their long-standing band members dying, not a new tour or new album.

Nowadays I have to settle for metal instead of rock if I want to hear something new, but there's not a lot of metal that I like so my options are fairly limited. I more or less consider rock to be the foundation/center of my musical interests (or something like that), so it's a bit disheartening that I haven't been able to listen to any new rock bands for as long as I can remember. It seems that all of the rock I listen to is old, usually older than I am.

No, Rock music isn't a dying breed. I think the blame comes from that a select few even knows what they want from their music at this time.

Rock changes.

Rock in the 70's and 80s is vastly different from Rock Around the Clock, and different today.

Grunge and emo music are considered alternative.

And they're rock.

Oh, yeah. I hear "alternative" by itself so often that I forgot it was alternative rock.

But, damn it, it's just not the same. Uniqueness can be taken too far; I'd like to hear more bands that are like Led Zeppelin, Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd and such. And Boston, too, of course.

While music is always growing and evolving, examples of what it was simply slide into other genre of music. Did you know groups that once ruled the air waves on rock stations in the 60's thru the 80's simply got pushed into arras like oldies, adult contemporary, jazz and even Country

Considering that I've banned myself from shopping in a store for music due to the idiots in the music industry redoing the classification system every few years and making a right mess of things every time they do, it is entiely possible that some Rock is now Alternative... I know for a fact some rock is as of my last check in a store for it was changed to country... go figure.

I'll never forget the time someone told me to check for Nightwish in the Gospel section...

I prefer what once was called 'light' rock, and what was 'pop' rock was generally nice.

Some euro bands from several years back I liked, as well as some alternative.

Why the heck some people have hordes of crazed fans though is beyond me... Take Lady Gaga or Snooky for example... every time I see them, she is trying to look more hideous... And the less said about JB, the better.
