Hidden Jokes in Ranma 1/2?

Postby Zwzn » Thu Mar 24, 2011 6:03 am

I recently googled Saotome, and came up with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/São_Tomé

I found it assuming Ranma's family name is sort of the Portuguese name for Saint Thomas.

Do you think this was on purpose?

Has anyone else ever noticed anything else like this?

Saotome shows up in so many different series as a family name that I suspect it is a common name in Japan and that any puns based off of it, other than being based off of the meanings of the kanji for the name, are likely unintentional.

I very much doubt something like that was on purpose. I'm sure there are lots of meaning to the names, but I doubt that one was on purpose.

I believe Saotome is supposed to translate to something like 'rice planting girl', which yes would likely be an intentional pun in regards to Ranma. Culturally it likely signifies a farming clan or a clan that farmed in it's history. Could be wrong though.

Edit: Looks like this was answered quite satisfactorily in this thread: clicky. Pay special attention to Ezvir's post even gives cultural meanings.
