No he really didn't. He will do whatever he thinks he needs to in order to win a fight. He will hide, he will lie, and while not shown often he will steal. He's not an evil person but he's not some paragon of virtue who rejected the values taught in his upbringing. He's better then his father and Happosai yes, but he's a very flawed character.
