I only recently began watching the Urusei Yatsura anime on Youtube, but I've grown to enjoy it. The characters are certainly quite... uh... "unique", and it has its own particular style. Being a major fan of Ranma 1/2, however, I found myself wondering: what might have have happened if, instead of Ataru Moroboshi, the Oni's tag race for Earth had been fought between Lum and Ranma Saotome? How might the race have gone? What might the fall out have been, Ranma certainly not being inclined to make Ataru's canonical mistake? And how would Ranma have won, anyway?
And I have little doubt Ranma would have won, in the end. Whereas Ataru is a determinator who can pull off feats of superhuman physical ability when highly motivated (by a pretty girl), Ranma is a superhuman. He can't fly, but he can run at speeds that probably wouldn't be too far removed from an Olympic candidate, keep up such speeds for minutes, maybe even hours, he leaps multiple stories in a single jump, is a master acrobat, probably wouldn't be too phazed by a lightning bolt if Lum panics and starts slinging them at him (admittedly, she didn't in the canon race) and, most importantly of all, he cheats worse then the devil himself.
...What? I like the guy, but I'd be the last to call him some sort of moral ideal.
Also, would anything change depending on when in the Ranma timeline the race took place? The basic idea assumes it happens during/after the canon events of Ranma 1/2, after the whole entourage of maniacs is installed in Nerima, but what might be different if the race happened...
Before Ranma even went to Jusenkyo?
Just after Ranma returned from Jusenkyo, but before he first went to the Tendos?
Very early in the series, before Ukyo or even Shampoo have shown up, while Ranma is still squabbling most viciously with Akane?
