A lot of arguments have been made about how the Tendo's manage to keep themselves properly fed and clothed and whatnot due to the repeated damage done to parts of their house and etc.
Some say that Nabiki takes care of the money problems while others think that Soun is somehow making the money. Or it could be that they've somehow managed to save up a large sum in the past and are living off of that.
But I watched the anime episode yesterday about Akane and Ranma-chan helping Nodoka cook while Kasumi is sick. While Akane is cooking, Nabiki decides to order sushi for everyone, but Soun stops her by specifically saying: "Not only do I have no sorce of income, but I also have three unwed daughters and two freeloading houseguests with bottomless pits for stomachs, and you want to order deluxe sushi?!"
I think that can safely conclude that Soun is not making any money, and if he is, it definitely isn't enough to be keeping the family afloat. I know that anime episode is also in the manga, but I don't have the book on me at the moment. If Soun happens to say something different in it than in the anime, please let me know.

Hmm, just checked. In the Italian version, he basically says the exact same thing.
So yeah, we can conclude that he does NOT contribute a single yen to the house.
And he still has the gall to complain...
The only thing I can think of is that either they have a large sum of money left from, I dunno... Soun's wife's life insurance... or Nabiki and possibly Kasumi with some part time jobs bring just enough money to keep the boat from sinking.

A number of fics have Kasumi with a job -- either secret from Soun and Akane or not. One for instance is transcribing all those books she gets from Tofu...
There's also an anime episode where they run out of food and Kasumi doesn't have money to get more, or something, I forget the exact senario.
However, that's not to say that as has been talked about elsewhere, they don't get money from a couple sources, and at that point just happened to be running low:
-Monster hunters. Why else would Ryugenzawa call? And a couple other times they are shown being asked.
-Renting out the dojo
-Joshua

Soun says basically the same thing in the manga too, according to the Italian translation...

In the manga, Soun doesn't say anything at all, because that particular scene (Nabiki dialing for sushi) doesn't exist in the chapter.

Would you please list exactly where in the manga this occurs? The Akane/Ranma "Creative Cooking" episode is in chapter 7 of volume 21 (Viz) / volume 23 (SS). Page number of this scene, please - because I certainly didn't see anything even close to that anime-only scene in that particular manga episode ...

None of em have a job or work for there money.
Only one who can be considering to be working is kasumi. And probly shoudl be paied for it.
Nabiki makes enought for petty cash, and mabie food for them. But i find this odd to as her room is rather beer as is kasumi's.
Money is ingored in the plot unless its used to move the plot along.
So it can be what ever the hell you want it to be.

I'd love to give you the exact quote, but there's two problems:
1) Mine is the Italian version, not the American or original, published by Star Comics. Different format, different chapter names.
2) To be fair, the comment wasn't when Nabiki ordered takeout - it was said after the house sustained damage during one of the middle-series chapters. Soun said something that's translated in English roughly as 'How are we going to fix this? I have no money!".
At any rate, let's not turn this in a flamewar. It's pointless. Myself, I just assume they have money saved up from when Soun DID work as a teacher in the dojo.

Let's just look at the other side of the equation.
1. Do they pay land taxes or there is some law excluding them as ancestors of old samurai clan/dojo in general/etc. ?
2. Is the land tax high in Nerima? It's a suburb, after all. Shouldn't be so high as in Tokyo.
It may be just so their expenditures aren't so great and the random jobs Soun takes from time to time are just enough.

The tendo's own an insane amount of land for a family that seems to have little money.
The taxs on something like that would be huge.
Souns town concle job wouldnt cover a fraction of it, and oddly enought neather would running the dojo. Place could be packed with students all day long and they would still be broke.
A house like that is for familes with Old money, or big corperations.

I'm not trying to flame you, GH, but I will not apologize for asking for proof when something is stated as fact in a discussion - especially on such a well-travelled discussion as the Tendo family income happens to be.
If you "just checked" your source, you shouldn't have much difficulty in describing the episode well enough so that those of us with different sources can confirm or debunk the assertation. You can, for instance, list where (volume/chapter/page) in the Italian series the "Cooking" episode starts, and then where the page and in what story your "new" reference is, and several of us are more than capable of cross-indexing it to find its location in the Viz/English and SS/Japanese manga.
Unfortunately, whether the scene actually exists in the original or not, your string of answers and how you presented them - switching facts in mid-stream without factual followup - leads me to totally discount everything you've stated in this thread. I would love to be proven wrong in this.

There is some evidence that Soun has a job of some sort since he used going on a business trip as an excuse to leave the house in volume 33.
We also see that they occasionally work as monster hunters and that the dojo is occasionally rented out (volume 13).
I can list a lot of reason as to why Nabiki isn't the bread winner and can't be but I don't feel like it.
Soun may have a work at home type job, own land elsewhere, have most of the money locked up in stocks or bonds, etc... There are a lot of jobs Soun could have that do not involve leaving the house everyday to go to work and/or have cash readily accessable. If for instance soun only gets paid every two weeks and has little to no money saved up then has to spend the money during the first week on repairs or something then he is left with no money during the second week to pay for things which would explain why the tendos are occasionally low on funds.
Oh and GenocideHeart: Not that it really matters but you could always give the quote in italian since people could always look up the words, or post a scan of the page in question if you have a scanner, or give enough details from the surrounding pages so that the person can figure out the story arc and maybe find the page in question. Second choice would be better becuase people could look up the page and if you give them a hint as to what volume it might be in they maybe able to find it in whatever language/release they are looking at.
