Shampoo & Ukyo: Woobies?

Postby SpaceKnight of Chaos » Thu Sep 04, 2008 10:45 pm

I was just reading the "The Woobie" article on TV Tropes when, to my astonishment, I discovered none other than these two girls listed amidst the anime section of examples. For those of you unfamiliar with the site and its terminology, a "woobie" is basically a character who suffers and, through that suffering, earns audience sympathy. The entry specifies that this applies solely to the anime incarnations of the Amazon and the Crossdresser, noting that the manga versions of them are far less (emphasising those two words) sympathetic, but still: does anyone really think that these two girls fit under this trope?

Here is the link for the disbelieving: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWoobie (They're between Kagura Tennouzou of Speed Grapher and Tails of Sonic X.
Water, water, everywhere, and all was cursed and black!
Drowned ones cast bad spell and out come pig, girl, duck, panda!
Swirl, swirl, slithery pond, and join with magic spring!
Swirl, swirl, dirty pond, and rid the cursed sting!
Here my prayer, I beg you please!
Now turn these curses BACK!

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up falling under subjective tropes.

Much like Cursed with Awesome has Ranma as the primary candidate, because most of the other curses are worse and because some people would like his curse.

I totally disagree that Ranma is cursed with awesome, especially if you consider the realities of the curse.
