I looked up the definition of bragging which lead me to the definition of boasting and I saw this "A boast is a claim that is intended to promote the claimee. Boasting is often denegrated in modern Western society as a character flaw. " Which leads me to the question: Is boasting not considered a character flaw in Eastern Society?

Well, in terms of describing whole cultures, such generalizations can be dangerous things to make, often times obscuring the truth more than revealing it. With that caveat in mind, everything I've heard indicates that (if a generalization is to be made) it's the reverse that would be at least closer to the truth, with Japanese culture tending to place a much greater importance on humility and self-deprecation.
