Fanfiction things/events contridicted by manga

Postby antimatterenergy » Mon May 01, 2006 2:30 am

Been reading Ranma fanfiction for awhile and decided to make a list of some things that I've seen in Ranma fanfiction that are contradicted by the manga.
Fanfiction: Cologne does not respect Ranma and only sees him as a worthless male good only for breading.
Manga: Cologne does respect Ranma as shown by being impressed with how fast he was able to learn the Hiryu Shoten Ha, the fact that he put up the best fight she's had in over 50 years, Cologne saying things like if I were only younger you'd make a good husband to Ranma, and Cologne uses the -dono honorific when talking to Ranma which signifies that you highly respect the person.
Fanfiction: Ranma hates weapons and will never use them.
Manga: Ranma uses weapons several times but does not rely on them.
Fanfiction: The musk get women by throwing animals into Junsenkyo.
Manga: The Musk in the past had done that but no longer practice mating with cursed animals.
Fanfiction: Ranma's mom's house is the Saotome ancestral home
Manga: During the Ryu Kumon story arc Ranma's mom says "The poor tenement house where we lived long ago was torn down, so I started over here... You don't remember, do you." to Ryu Kumun when she though he was Ranma.
Fanfiction: Ranma's mom is rich
Manga: Ranma's mom is pretty poor and uses old papers (such as genma's scrolls) to make envelopes.
Fanfiction: Akane loves acting and will go to college for acting
Manga: Akane didn't really want to do any acting until she was told it was the part of Juliet which made her happy since in the past she always played Romeo. Ranma, Kuno, Happosai, the parents, and Gosunkugi wrecked that for her and probably made her like acting less than she did before.
Fanfiction: Akane always attacks with a mallet.
Manga: Akane rarely attacks with a mallet and usually attacks with her fists or whatever's near by.
Fanfiction: Akane's cooking is so bad it can create life forms or be classified as toxic waste.
Manga: Akane's cooking is pretty bad but no where near toxic waste level and does see some improvement during the manga. Though considering the number of magic things that manage to show up I would not be surprised if she where to accidentally mix in some magic stuff Happosai or someone left around the house into the food and it brought the food to life.
Fanfiction: Shampoo sticks magic stuff in to the food to get Ranma to love her on a regular basis.
Manga: Shampoo did that only once and that was to get a hug, Magic mushrooms and they weren't mixed in with other food.
Fanfiction: Since Akane hates boys she's a lesbian.
Manga: Akane did have a crush on Dr. Tofu so she's not a lesbian. Though she maybe bi-sexual since Akane is nicer to Ranma when Ranma's female, Akane didn't break the engagement when Ranma was stuck female, and Shampoo called Akane a pervert-girl because of the way Akane acted when a cure to the cat tongue pressure point was offered Ranma.
Fanfiction: Genma has engaged Ranma many many times.
Manga: Genma has engaged Ranma two maybe three times. 1. To a Tendo 2. To Ukyo. and maybe 3. to Picollette Chardon to get out of a debt (possible future daughter Soun did this one as well). It is possible that Genma had done it more to get out of a debt or because its a pretty good scam but we only know of two times (maybe 3 if the one to Picollette Chardon counts)
Fanfiction: Gosunkugi practices magic is just bad at it.
Manga: Only thing he does that can even be considered magic is his use of Voodoo dolls. Those paper dolls that made Ranma trip and go on a date with him don't count because he did not make them he bought them.
Fanfiction: All Mousse needs to do to marry Shampoo is defeat her.
Manga: Though the manga doesn't explicitly say this is untrue and it may help his chances since Shampoo seems to like strong men. This doesn't make sense. The marriage laws appear to have been made to bring new blood into the tribe since Mousse is a tribe member his marrying Shampoo will not bring in new blood.
Fanfiction: Nabiki is incredibly smart and plans everything through.
Manga: Nabiki does things for fast easy money and rarely if ever thinks about the consequences of her actions to others or even herself. Ex. taking picture of Ranma when he was a sleep when she knew nothing about how Ranma might retaliate when he found out, or not taking in account how dangerous it is to be Ranma's fiancee, or what would happen to her or her family if she lost the 10 yen battle.
Fanfiction: Nabiki runs a betting pool at school and is pretty much a yakuza member (not one but close enough)
Manga: Nabiki might have the morals of the Yakuza but she doesn't run a betting pool. She doesn't even watch most of the fights.
Fanfiction: Nabiki handles the Tendo's money.
Manga: She doesn't and Soun would be pretty stupid to entrust her with it. Hell if he was that dumb he might as well have Genma take care of it.
Fanfiction: Nodoka is a blade master (extremely skilled in sword techniques)
Manga: Nodoka has next to no skill with the sword and is a danger to herself and others.
Fanfiction: Shampoo secretly loves Mousse but can't or won't show it.
Manga: When it looked like Mousse was dying Shampoo was more interested in watching TV then helping Mousse.
Fanfiction: Ranma will tell just about anyone he meets his fear of cats, about his Junsenkyo curse, and his entire life story.
Manga: Ranma tells no one nothing unless he has to and not even then often letting others tell instead. Did not tell the Tendo's about his curse, did not tell anyone about his fear of cats, did not tell Ukyo about his curse until she found out about it, etc...
Fanfiction: Ranma will not go on dates with anyone especially not boys.
Manga: Ranma will go on a date with just about anyone if he sees a reason to and has gone on many date with both males, females, and spirits (panda painting, and does the old guys astral form count as a guy or a spirit).
Fanfiction: If Ranma is injured he will run to Dr Tofu's immediately for treatment.
Manga: Ranma has only gone to Dr. Tofu's for treatment when someone else brought him there or with someone else.
Fanfiction: Nabiki likes Ranma if not as a possible husband then like a brother.
Manga: Nabiki does not like Ranma. She manipulates and blackmails him. When she thought he might have died in the battle with Herb she shrugged. She sold him during the 10 yen battle to be a slave. She was willing to reveal and speak ill of him to his mother knowing full well the death threat his mom holds over him because he still had a mother and she didn't.
Fanfiction: Ranma insults ever single person he meets for no reason
Manga: Ranma does not insult everyone. He generally doesn't insult anyone on purpose until after they have done or said something offensive to him.
Fanfiction: Ranma frequently endangers innocent bystanders.
Manga: Ranma rarely does that the people who are attack him will though. i.e. Ryoga throwing his bandannas, Mousse willing to turn many people into ducks to get at Ranma, Mousse throwing knives at Ranma not paying attention to children in the background.
Fanfiction: Ryoga has an unlimited amount of bandannas at all times.
Manga: Ryoga only had a lot of bandannas on during his first fight with Ranma.
Fanfiction: Genma is incredibly lazy and would never get a job
Manga: Genma isn't super lazy (still lazy), spends time training Ranma, and has had a job working as an assistant for Dr. Tofu.
Fanfiction: Ranma gets hit by a car and is seriously injured so much so that he can never do martial arts again.
Manga: Ranma has shown a toughness level and healing ability high enough that if he were to ever be hit by a car he'd probably get up like nothing happened. (His getting hit in the first place is stupid since he could easily get out of the way or jump over it.)
Fanfiction: Ranma has no skill with weapons
Manga: Ranma fights with weapons like he was born holding them
now list some you've noticed.

Oh, nice little compiliation, Ame. ^^
Let's see...
Fanon: Ukyo and Shampoo destroyed Ranma and Akane's wedding in the final volume, which they were both eager to go through with.
Manga: Akane was being blackmailed by Soun. Ranma was knocked out and woke up in a tuxedo. While Shamps and Ukyo were at the wedding they were hardly the only ones to blame for it ending the way it did.
Fanon: Ranma and Akane are deeply hurt at Ukyo and Shampoo's actions during the failed wedding.
Manga: Both are relieved that the incident is behind them and never allude to being angry at anyone for their particpation in the debacle.
Fanon: Shampoo can handily defeat Mousse in battle.
Manga: Shampoo going all out loses to Ranma on two occasions with inexcusable ease. During the Cat's Tongue and Jizo stories Mousse battles Ranma to the limit. Do your own math.
Fanon: Akane can defeat Kuno with ease.
Manga: It's both stated and illustrated that Kuno holds back significantly when dueling Akane. She does admirably during the Cheerleading story, but he is without his weapon of choice (a bokken) and she still struggles.
Fanon: Only Ranma calls Ukyo 'Ucchan'.
Manga: This may come as a surprise, but in the original Japanese, whenever directly addressing her, Kasumi also call her Ucchan.
Fanon: Genma and Soun drink a lot.
Manga: They have a drink when Genma returns to the dojo with Ranma in the opening volume. Other than that very little comes to mind.
Fanon: Genma is a relatively weak martial artist.
Manga: Genma can hold his own against Ranma well into the story, and provide a formidable sparring partner for him throughout the entire manga. His defeat at Ukyo's hands earlier in the story is intentional on his part.
Fanon: Ranma easily surpasses Herb in ability.
Manga: After being successively knocked unconscious several times and with repeated assistance from Mousse and Ryoga, Ranma manages to survive long enough to finally pull a one-off manoeuvre successful in taking out Herb.
Fanon: Saffron is a god/demigod.
Manga: He is the Immortal Phoenix King. End. Of. Story.

Fannon: Shampoo dosent respect mouse, and hates him
Manga: Under the reversal jewel, shampoo hits mouse.
The Banana, the Atheist's Nightmare:

God made it with a non-slip surface, a color coded system so we know when to eat it, and an easy open tab at the top of the banana. It's just the right shape for a mouth and is easy to digest!!

Fannon: Colongue will often hatch plans to 'get Ranma, over and over
Manga: Cologue might take advantage of the situation (love pills, reversal jewel) but so does everyone else, especially the fathers. She only had a scheme in the cat's tongue.

TerraEpon - that's untrue she also had a scheme when she taught Ryoga the breaking point. Though it isn't said or stated anywhere and the manga does not confirm this in anyway I always thought that Cologne called the dojo destroyer after over hearing Soun and Genma's plan.
Fanfiction: Mousse wearing glasses is still blind as a bat.
Manga: Mousse can see when wearing his glasses but doesn't like to wear them because he is vain. (Think someone even said he's got pretty eyes.)

I think it's more like Shampoo just doesn't care about Mousse. That, or the jewel only affects ROMANTIC feelings.
Fanfiction: Genma thinks school is a waste of time, and only sends Ranma there because he has to.
Manga: Genma's the one who sent Ranma to school in the beginning. And in Japan, not only is highschool is NOT mandatory, you have to pay tuition to go there. Genma even complained about Ranma's grades at one point.

Akane didn't really want to do any acting.

Akane was shown to be in plays prior to the Romeo and juliet story. Playing romeo, unfortunately, which she did not like. This goes contrary to "not wanting to do any acting". Apparently she liked it enough to appear as a male.
Fanfiction: Shampoo sticks magic stuff in to the food to get Ranma to love her on a regular basis.
Manga: Shampoo did that only once and that was to get a hug, Magic mushrooms and they weren't mixed in with other food.

If a fanfiction shows akane making a love potion in the same giggly mindset as shampoo probably would, people would complain it being out of character.
Shampoo doing it once sets precedent. It shows her capable of doing so. Since fanfiction is about extending a series, it shouldn't be surprising that this should be used.

Precedent. No proof of existence is not the same as proof of non-existence.
Genma did it more than once and was brought to light only because the injured party showed up in the series. This is absolutely no way means that Genma didn't do it again, and is quite in-character for him.
Fanfiction: Gosunkugi practices magic is just bad at it.
Manga: Only thing he does that can even be considered magic is his use of Voodoo dolls. Those paper dolls that made Ranma trip and go on a date with him don't count because he did not make them he bought them.

Hence, he's bad at it. There's no contradiction here.
Fanfiction: Nabiki runs a betting pool at school and is pretty much a yakuza member (not one but close enough)
Manga: Nabiki might have the morals of the Yakuza but she doesn't run a betting pool. She doesn't even watch most of the fights

Just because it wasn't mentioned that she did, is not proof that she didn't. It would be quite within character for her to do so.
Fanfiction: Nabiki handles the Tendo's money.
Manga: She doesn't and Soun would be pretty stupid to entrust her with it. Hell if he was that dumb he might as well have Genma take care of it.

She does, or at least given enough authority to hock the Tendo home.
Fanfiction: If Ranma is injured he will run to Dr Tofu's immediately for treatment.
Manga: Ranma has only gone to Dr. Tofu's for treatment when someone else brought him there or with someone else.

If he went there once, even if someone else took him, it would stand to reason that he trusts Tofu enough to look at him, as well as minimizing the amount of people who know about his curse (considering that wound debridement needs cold water). Is there any reason why Ranma _won't_ go to Dr. Tofu? (aside from Tofu playing less and less importance and virtually disappearing in the middle of the manga)
Fanfiction: Ryoga has an unlimited amount of bandannas at all times.
Manga: Ryoga only had a lot of bandannas on during his first fight with Ranma.

He continues to wear a bandanna till the end of the searies. There's no reason to think Ryoga would suddenly lose this attack mode.
Fanfiction: Nodoka is a blade master (extremely skilled in sword techniques)
Manga: Nodoka has next to no skill with the sword and is a danger to herself and others.

I agree, and find it very, very annoying. Even in "Forever the Tomboy," a fic that I love, I find Nodoka being a blademaster irritating. Being "richer than the Kunos", or an Indiana Jones-type character, or the decescendant of some form of ancient martial art stories also tick me off.

what also tickes me off is Nodoka Divorcing Genma. She waited for him for ten years!!!, She agreed to a seppuku pledge!!! also she values honour over anything. Nodoka divorcing genma, for an understandable mistake, is something I can not accept. Nodoka divorcing genma would be a huge dishonourable thing to do!!!
And I can not accept the whole seppuku pledge for having genma behaving. If that was the case, she wouldn't be carryng the sword when genma isn't around!!!

Mondu_de_fat if you go and look at the romeo and juliet arc at the beginning she doesn't want to do the play and tries to get them to choose Ranma before she even knew what play it was. She only wanted to be in the play because she in the past wanted to be Juliet but never was. It clearly shows that she didn't want to do any acting except for the one part denied her in the past.
As for the other I'm not saying you can't use them in fan-fiction only that they don't occur as often or their is very little precedence in the manga. Nowhere near as much as in fanfiction.
For instance Shampoo has never added stuff to food and everyone trusts her cooking she just used a mind controlling food once and gave it to Ranma but she never added it to his food secretly. In fan-fiction she sneaks it in to the food manga she outright force feeds him it. Completely different. Now kodachi would do something like this and no one would be surprised.
As for the betting pools that is definitely not in the manga. In the manga Nabiki doesn't even show up for the prearranged fights which betting pools can easily be setup. (you can easily see the audience and she isn't there) Betting pools are 100% fan-fiction only.
As for going to Dr. Tofu. I don't think Ranma trust Dr. Tofu. He only went with Akane at the very beginning of the manga afterwards he never went for any type of treatment, though Akane went for him to ask for the possible cure to the cat tongue pressure point. The reasons I believe he doesn't trust Dr. Tofu are because Dr. Tofu purposely disabled Ranma's legs, tends to use painful techniques while healing Ranma, the way he acts around Kasumi (accidentally injured Ranma), and may see Dr Tofu as a rival for Akane's affection.
As for with Ryoga's bandanna's in later manga arcs we see that he is only wearing one. He still has the technique but doesn't prepare or use it anymore.
As for Nabiki taking care of the finances that is not shown in anyway in the manga she was racking up bills but she didn't hock the house Soun did to pay off her debts. It is the same as if when I was a teen and I had racked up massive fines my mother would have had to pay them since I was a minor.
Fanfiction: Ranma will not hit girls.
Manga: The whole situation with Shampoo occurred because he hit her and Ranma had wanted to just hit Kodachi during the rhythmic gymnastics match.
Fanfiction: Ranma doesn't do anything but train for entertainment.
Manga: Ranma reads manga (often while training in the dojo with Akane) and plays video games (well enough to beat Hinako-sensei a person who frequently plays them.)

Don't have time to address the rest of this, but the betting pools exist in the anime - they are not "100% fanfiction". Manga? Agreed - no betting pools or Nabiki behavior to indicate they would exist.

Betting pools are in the Anime? i didn't know that. I haven't seen very much of the anime just the movies, oavs, and a couple random episodes. I'd watch it but it is not on TV and local video rental stores barely carry any anime at all and what they do is like pokemon and DBZ. They don't even have Sailormoon or evangelion. I'd buy it but they want over $100 a season and from what I heard it's not worth that price. (can't download it only have crappy dial-up (24 kbps) need to replace phone lines for better speed.)
Fanfiction: Ranma values honor more than life
Manga: other way around he values life more than honor if he didn't then he'd have told his mom and he wouldn't have run away when she had him prepare for Seppuka.

Manga: NO he DID NOT!
Did he ever do it in the anime? If not, then where the hell does everyone get it from?!?!?!

Daikoku Kaori is actually from the anime episode "It's Fast or It's Free". Since it's from the anime I wouldn't really consider it canon.

Yes, Atlan, it's from the anime.

Yep. The only time I can think of, right now, was about the time Ryoga first appeared. She even attempted to 'fix' the fight by giving him a pill to make him stronger (it was a placebo though).
Mondu wrote:He continues to wear a bandanna till the end of the searies. There's no reason to think Ryoga would suddenly lose this attack mode.

The first movie has a scene where Ryoga runs out of bandanas (well down to his last two at least) during the fight right after they board the Seven Lucky Gods' ship. Of course, since it's from the anime it doesn't count/matter as antimatterenergy is comparing fanfiction to the manga.
