Ranma's singing voice[s]/critique

Postby Kyrtythren » Tue Sep 05, 2006 1:57 am

Feel vaguely bad about asking here, since I'm writing a straight Ranma fic, but I don't have any other great place to, so hopefully it's not too bad.
-----
I've got a scene (basically) with Ranma singing for an audition and I'd like to have the auditioneer critique it. However, I don't really know much about vocal critique (other than being vocal in my critique, hehehe) and I've only read the manga and seen a few movies, which hampers my knowledge of what the characters actually sound like. I could try finding sources, but that doesn't solve my first problem. Any ideas?
Also, relatedly, any recommendations on what good songs would be to highlight features of each singing voice? I can just pick something random, but an auctual audition piece kind of thing seems better. And again, I don't really know what makes a good vocal audition piece....presumably something showing range, expression, and ability but pop music (which I was trying to use so that readers might have an idea of what I'm aiming for) is short on those. And to be completely accurate, I should use Japanese songs, which I (and perhaps many readers?) know less about.
Really, I'm worrying too much about the scene on the whole, but I want it to be convincing :(.

Well details would depend on which form you're talking about. Going by the anime male Ranma is a tenor and female Ranma is usually described as mezzo-soprano.
Some things a reviewer might critique singing on is
Are they hitting the right notes at the right key (especially the high ones)
Are the hitting the notes on time and can they hold them (holding them shouldn't be a problem for Ranma considering general level of fitness)
Emotional content. A technically perfect performance can still be considered substandard if it does not convey the intended emotional impact though this varies from song to song.
If your spirit has wings to travel, even across the breadth of a thousand, million nights, imagination will guide the way and the gates of El-Hazard will always be open to you.

A few more things

From my small bit of voice training and choral experience:
* Where is the sound being produced? It should come from an open, relaxed pallate, and start deep in the gut.
* Are the vowel sounds tall, "open", and well enunciated?
* Is there wavering in the notes? How pure are the notes?
* Are the tones nasal? (Sometimes, it's desirable to do this, to push the tone "forward" into the mask of the face, most times, not, though)
* Does the style of singing match the style of music? Classical/operatic, show tunes, folk, rock, and country are all sung differently, for example.
Good luck!

There is one OVA (the xmas special) where Ranma and the girls actually do sing... Other then that I'm not that musically inclined, but if you can track that episode down, it'd atleast give you an idea I suppose.

"Ranma and the girls" in fact have two CDs worth (well, it's about 65 minutes total) of songs, as the 'group' called DoCo. THOSE are what's worth tracking down
The song they sing in the Christmas OVA is on the 'Fighting Song Karuta' CD. In fact, all the cast members since on that, and there are some others.
Try looking for the song "Love Letter from China", that's easily the best, er, comparison between the voices you'll get
