Yes, it would cut the commute time out of the picture. But why would they want to go to Furinkan if they could get into a better high school? Even granting that the nutty stuff didn't happen every day, the learning environment at Furinkan isn't exactly the sort that would be good on an application to a major university.

I think they're still in junior high, so they wouldn't be going to Furinkan. And I'm pretty sure there are several schools, both junior and high, in the area that they could go to. Remember, Ellen is trying to get Ami and Makoto some training in Nerima. I was just pointing out a possible way for it to happen. I don't know if it could work, given that they're needed in Juuban, but it was just a suggestion.
Unless I say otherwise, if I'm discussing Ranma canon, I'm talking about the MANGA.

The Senshi have so much trouble with monsters showing up at inappropriate times, poor things. I'm trying to arrange matters so their schedules aren't any worse for their training, at least. Long and frequent commutes, and skipping classes, are uncool.

Anybody know for sure if the Senshi have to deal with school on Saturday morning?

At the time the series was being made, Japan was undergoing a debate on the subject of the Saturday half-day. They were discussing whether or not to eliminate it, and eventually many school districts compromised by having it on every other Saturday. IIRC, the idea is that eventually they will phase it out entirely.

So you can go either way at your discretion and be historically accurate. They can have school every Saturday, or every other Saturday. I don't think canon ever mentioned what their school did.
