Biohazard: Days of Doom

Postby Dorin » Sun Feb 08, 2009 2:58 pm

It was just another univserity science fair, or it was supposed to be. We'd just won a major grant from the Alerdine Pharmacutical Corperation. Those wizards of chemistry who'd given us the latest treatments to cancer, HIV, and others. Well, they never really have cured anything since they were founded back in the fourties, but they have come up with treatments that add years, sometimes even decades to people's lives. Maybe it isn't the most honest buisness practice, but people will pay almost anything to keep breathing and function, somewhat, normally; and to their credit, Alerdine hasn't been fleecing...*ahem* but we digress.

In a competition spanning fifteen countries, on three continents, they were looking to grant a big, very big, check to the university science department that could crack a complex chemical formula into the base components. A weird challenge, or so we thought, until we got the stuff. It was like trying to telling how many molecules of Xenon gas you're breathing, with only your eyes, nearly impossible. But, we at Our Blessed Saint Hilda's Lovely Voice (did I mention we, the student body, really hate the name of this place?) finally cracked the code. And so, we got the dough.

And in celebration, the Alumni, faculty, student body, and about a million other people from the local area, and beyond, were invited to this big theme park style event. To show off our latest projects, encourage new enrollment, and hell even try to get some better football players! (Our team sucks...honestly.) It was really a pretty good time...until lunchtime.

Don't really know what happened, the chemistry club were out on the football field, putting it to the only good use it possibly could have, demonstrating all kinds of neat effects in the name science. Such as our collaboration with the carpentry club, in building a wooden cannon! Or demonstrating the destructive power of thermite (yeah, I know, we got a little carried away). Anyway, there's this big commotion over the PA system.

"All attendies, please remain calm, and proceed to the Central Lawn. Repeat, all attendies, please remain calm and proceed to the Central Lawn..."

Or some such, I forget really. The Central Lawn, which isn't really central to anything, but the main road connecting every branch of this sprawling campus (we're about fourty-thousand students spread over a sixty acre property) and, coincidently, it's the emergency evac zone in case of a bomb. We thought it was just some kinda prank by the administration. Dean Menill is infamous for his bouts of retribution on the student body...and every other body in range. Such as the time one of the frats egged his car, and he replied by having "Teacher Toilet Paper Hurling Day" (it should be mentioned, in the sake of 'speed' he allowed the teachers access to a couple of those CO2 t-shirt cannons, which really gave them an unfair advantage) and well...I don't think we ever got all the frat houses clean.

In any case, we proceed out to the Central Lawn, be it by walking, bus, or car. Worried there's probably a catapult loaded with shaving-cream-ballons (the Dean's been known to do that) waiting for us, only to come upon a terrible sight. A scuffle. Well, fights aren't unexpected, just rather uncommon...especially without the addition of alcohol.

When it becomes clear, the guy on top, mauling the poor, skinny nerd, is BITING him, and biting him good. The attempt to haul the asshole off resulted in...skin coming from the bone. The horrified people trying to break it up, proceeded to find their ownselves on the receiving end of a vicious pair of chompers. And...this wasn't an isolated incident. It was happening all over the place.

It was the damnest shit we've ever scene. And...it was only tbe beginning of our horror.

Welcome to the attempt of Survival Horror, classic zombiefest style.

This'll be an IRC based game:

Channel: to be determined
Day: Monday (subject to change)
Time: to be determined

Character Premise:

Any kind of real world thing you can envision. Be it something as mundane as the postman, or as rare as Green Berets. The subject of your background is a developing process between the PCs and DM.

Character Creation:

The game will be using D20 rules, in a slightly modified manner.

Stats:

Roll 4d6, drop the lowest number. Do this six times, and arrange to taste for stats.

Skills:

For level 1 characters; starting skill points are thus:

(8 + Int bonus) x 4.

For levels 2 on:

(8 + Int bonus)

In the beginning, from the D20 modern list, take your choice of twelve skills. Which will be class skills. All other skills are cross-class skills, and be taken at the normal cost of two skill points, for one rank.

Skills should, preferably follow a theme, such a "Police Work" or something like that but it's not a forced rule.

Feats:

Begin play with two feats, drawn from the D20 Modern list, some feats might be rejected upon a review.

A note on weapons:

You must have, Weapon Profiency: Melee, Pistols, Rifles (includes assault rifles), Shotgun, Sub-Machinegun, or Thrown to be able to use one of those types of weapons without the -4 penelty. Melee weapons will be a very broud range, anything from true swords, to baseball bats, to golf clubs. The rest are rather self-explainatory.

Hit points:

This will be different than your standard D20 game.

Hitpoints will be divided into two categories. Stamina and Wound.

Stamina points represent your ability to dodge, take fire, etc, etc. These will normally be your 'damage' range, doesn't automically mean you've been bitten, clawed, or hit; but it represents your range of avoiding those things. The longer you stay alive, the better your odds of avoiding injury.

Stamina is calculated by a d8 + your Con bonus. First level is an automatic 8 + Con; while every subsiquent level will be rolled.

Wound points are actual, physical damage done to your body. Once you run out of stamina, you begin to take real hits. When you hit 0, you're a dead mutha.

Wound comes directly from your Constitution score; whatever it is, your wound points are. Although gaining wound damage doesn't effect your Con, if you lose Con, your wounds are effecting directly as a result.

Note: Critical hits automatically bypass Stamina and go straight to Wound points. Enemy gets in a good Crit, you're dead. The same applies to enemies as well.

Attacks and Saves:

Normally these are determined by class, but there's no such thing in this game. Your skills are rather the set of your profession, life experiences, and other such things; your attacks and saves are determined by one of two things. Being an "Offense" or "Defense" style character.

Offense:

Taking this option gives better attacks, but worse saves. Your chance to hit goes up, but so does your potential of taking damage. Soldiers, cops, etc, would be good offensive choices.

With offense, your Attacks progress as a Cleric/Rogue/Monk from DnD

Armor Class:

Your AC will be determined by the formula of (Armor, if any) + Your Dex bonus + your Character bonus + Any other bonuses.

Defense Characters gain defensive bonus as follows:

+2 at first level, with an additional +1 for every five levels.

Offense characters get only a +1 bonus every give levels. Beginning with +0 at level 1, then +1 at level 5, and so on. Offense characters also begin play with an additional Weapon Proficency feat.

Weapons:

Discuss with me what kind of weapon you might be looking for to begin play. Other equipment and money will be determined at a later time.

For now, that's it. Interested folk may post here, or contact me on IRC.
