Ninja Moon

I've had this idea bouncing around in my skull for a while. It is a big enough project that I don't plan on starting it any time soon, but was curious what you guys would think of it. It is a Sailor Moon x Naruto crossover, though more of a thematic one than story wise. The basic idea is that after the Moon Kingdom collapsed, most of the survivors were combat mages. This, coupled with the amount of youma which escaped being trapped with the Dark Kingdom led to the preservation of more Moon Kingdom knowledge than in canon SM and leading to the formations of groups of highly trained soldiers that, over time, created the ninja villages. Usagi and the others are reborn into this time.

Usagi is one of many orphans left by the attack of the Kyuubi no Kitsune. Nothing is known of her real parents, but she has been adopted by a loving couple who have since had a child of their own. She is not a ninja, being too clumsy to get into the academy on a scholarship and her parents being too poor to pay for it, but she idolizes them and jumps at the chance to become a mahou kunoichi, Ninja Moon. She manages to go quite a while before her identity is discovered thanks to the genjutsu associated with her transformation that keeps people from recognizing her. Once recognized, the ninja of Konoha assume that she has some sort of strange Kekkei Genkai that makes her very effective at fighting the legendary monsters who have started attacking again after being gone so long that people thought they were myths, and she gets intensive ninja training, whether she likes it or not. A point I was thinking about including was one of her instructors realizing that her clumsiness comes from having instinctive reflexes that are attuned to an adult body that she never took enough conscious control of to adjust to the size of her actual body.

Luna and Artemis would be treated as being spirit animals like the toad and dog summons. Luna is especially useful in catching Tora, should I write up that particular mission, and both of them are surprised when they get treated like people once the ninjas know they can talk.

One of the big story differences is in the rainbow crystals and their hosts: the biijuu. When Serenity sealed the 9 great youma, she didn't have enough power left over to ensure they would stay sealed, so she sealed them into the strongest of the spirit beasts, the leaders of 9 of the spirit clans, like the giant frog, giant slug, and giant snake summoned by the Sannin. This had the side effect of slowly driving several of these beasts insane, as in the case of Shukaku and Kyuubi, and causing others like the three tailed turtle to try to find some out of the way place where nobody would bother them. As Usagi collects each crystal and heals the toxic mess left in the chakra of these beasts, they lose a great deal of power but become sane in the process. Shukaku is still an a-hole, but he is a sane a-hole.

The other scouts would be dealt with as I saw their personalities:

Minako would definitely be a ninja, with no particular specialization, being instead a good generalist. Once discovered, her affinity for metal justu(either fire and earth or lightning and earth, since this would affect what other elemental jutsu she would be likely to learn and use).

Ami would be a ninja who is currently studying to become a full medical ninja, with a personal specialization in genjutsu(especially once it is discovered that her shabon spray is a mix of water and genjutsu, creating a field that not even a Hyuuga can see through, but that she can selectively let those she chooses see through at will).

Rei would still be a mako, who gets conscripted to ninja-dom because of her extreme affinity for fire and because of what the cats say. She most resists joining the team of any of the members. Maybe I could have her treat this as an extension of her duties exorcising demons.

Makoto is a taijutsu specialist with an affinity for both lightning jutsu and wood jutsu. She would be the most enthusiastic about the chance for more fighting against monsters that are considered practically unkillable by standard ninja.

To write this properly would be a huge project. I'm wondering what you all think of the idea.

Color me interested, but how exactly would Beryl and the Generals fit in here and what's stopping someone like Jiraiya from taking them all out in his spare time?

Well, first off, the whole dark kingdom was both stronger back during the Moon Kingdom(thus why they weren't defeated as thoroughly), and regains more of its strength faster because of the vastly larger amounts of energy that can be collected from trained ninja. With the Senshi having ninja training, the Dark Kingdom kind of has to be enhanced or they would be wiped out by genin. The big advantage that the Senshi have over even someone such as Jiraiya is that their attacks are vastly more focused. They can channel amounts of energy that a ninja would only be able to use in a large area attack, but use it in an attack that only hits one individual and punches through their defenses in a way that Jiraiya could only manage with a heck of a lot of collateral damage. Add to that that their planetary bindings replenish their chakra very rapidly, and they have the kind of stamina that can otherwise only be matched by a jinchuriki, without that whole "go insane and destroy everyone around you" issue that everyone constantly worries about happening if the jinchuriki's seal isn't perfect enough.

There would only be a few large area attacks coming from being Senshi, with most of those having been developed since the fall of the Moon Kingdom for human vs. human wars, whereas the Senshi's abilities were specifically for tackling supernatural threats such as rogue spirit animals and youma.

I'm interested as well.

You should make some more detailed decisions about Lore interaction though.

For instance you said Makoto specializes in Lighting and Wood elements, but in Naruto Wood is a combination of Water and Earth elements, which have to be mastered in order to use Wood at all, as well as a special bloodline-like trait to use Wood techniques, derived from the Shodaime. So does Makoto have a special ability previously only seen in the Shodaime that people wonder the origins of, and has Water, Earth, (combined)Wood, and Lighting elements? Or maybe you should have entirely new elemental rules separate from Naruto. Perhaps the base elements are like those of some of the senshi, Wood, Metal, Water, Fire, and Earth, with different elements having special 2ndary elements, such as Wood having Lighting, Water having Ice and Genjutsu? Or maybe some original system of your own.

What about the senshi transformations? It can be implied that they get the schoolgirl uniform based serifuku because of Sailor V starting out in England, and Sailor Moon starting out in Japan, both of which use such uniforms for schoolgirls their ages, and the magic, or perhaps the cats, ensured it would end up that way, and connections between the planets may have affected the outer scouts as well once the inners and Sailor Moon were awakened. But in a ninja world they might have different uniforms. Perhaps their ninja-world outfits are similar to ANBU cloaks, but with their colors and their planetary symbols on the foreheads of the plain masks. The exceptions to this would be stuff like old artifacts, like some of Sailor Moon's wands, the Mercury Computer, the Princess Serenity dress, and stuff like that.

Also, what happens to jinchuuriki when Sailor Moon purifies the rainbow crystals out of their bijuu, or the Dark Kingdom steals it from them?

And what about the Dark Generals? You said that stuff about them vs. Jiraiya, but perhaps you might also want to consider they may even hire some ninja groups to do their deeds, especially in offer of extra powers, youma support, and vast wealth hidden in vaults in the Dark Kingdom. Beyrl might even recruit some modern ninja that are vulnerable to such temptations into being turned into a new generation of dark general types, with originally ninja style powers, rather than originally swordsman-mage style powers, possibilities including Orochimaru and Hidan.

What about Sailor Moon's Healing/Purification powers, how are these powers related to those of Miko like Rei, or medical ninjutsu? And what about the healing powers of Hotaru, does she seem to have some kind of medical jutsu kekkei genkai?

Possible suggestion about Usagi's clumsiness: rather than make it related to her body maturity/size issues, make it a 'style' similar to drunken boxing, which deliberately appears clumsy, but is very good defensively, but before her full awakening, and starting to really practice with it, remnants of it that remained with her reincarnation made her clumsy when attempting to fight, because her reflexes told her to do clumsy looking things and mess up, without the full skill set to support them or do them properly. Once she gets some practice in, it would actually be realized to be a style that she has to finish re-learning, but is actually a pretty good and deceptive style, built around appearing clumsy, but takes advantage of high speed and movements comparable to Drunken Boxing and the fighting style of Voldo from Soul Caliber series, lots of wacky, clumsy-looking movements and techniques which are actually really powerful and good defensively, and great for dodging and setting up attacks that can break through normal blocking techniques. She also might have insane chakra levels, but associated difficulties with control, causing her to have trouble learning ninjutsu much like cannon Naruto, which would also keep her out of the academy at first as you suggested.

Finally, what about major characters from Naruto, particularly Naruto himself, the villains particularly the big leagues from Akatsuki and Sound, and the Uchiha, Uzumaki, and Senju families? There clearly isn't a juubi, so what is the alternate histories behind the Senju, Uchiha, and Uzumaki in your story? Is there and Akatsuki, and what are their goals? Is there a Rinnegan and a 6 paths sage in the past? Are the ninja villages older than cannon Naruto (where they are only nearly 70 years old or so if I remember correctly, given the age Madara was supposed to be and that he is one of Konoha's founders), and if so, how many Hokage have their been? What are the differences Ami might note between modern ninja arts and old elemental magic arts, are the hand-signs a new development, and what was used before them? Same for sealing arts, or are sealing arts old? How do the generals compare to ninja ranks, are they S-rank opponents, A-rank, B-rank, defying normal classifications, stronger in some areas and weaker in others than normal ninja? How do average ninja stand up to a youma, and can they detect youma or the Dark Kingdom draining techniques and such? How are Luna and Artemis comparable to the spirit beasts of Naruto, are they actually frozen/sent-forward members of the ancient version of the cat-spirit-beast clan which has a contract with the Uchiha clan's servant clan?

What about Usagi's psychic abilities? She can often hear 'cries for help', no matter the distance, so how did she react during the Uchiha massacre or the kidnapping attempt by Cloud of Hinata?

Also, do the ninja, Diyamo, and/or priests/priestesses, even the common people have any legends passed down from the Moon Kingdom? Are there any books about it? How much have these stories been altered from the truth in the intervening years? Does anyone know the senshi will be getting resurrected, and are there any plans around such?

What about Tuxedo Mask?... lol...

Lets see how this goes! I can't wait!

Re: Ninja Moon

I recently rewatched the episodes where they introduced wood ninjutsu, and the way things were worded it wasn't the ability to use wood that was unique to the Shondaime, it was his affinity for and ability to control spirit beasts. The wording, which I admit might be a result of the translation, suggests that there are other people who have been born with the ability to wield wood style jutsu, just that none of them were as good at it as he was. Even if that isn't canon, it is the interpretation I would be likely to go for. At first, Makoto would seem to have a very strong affinity for lightning jutsu, until she spontaneously uses a wood jutsu, possibly without mastering water and earth first.

If I went far enough into the story, I had thought of having Hotaru be a test subject for Orochimaru or the daughter of one of his men. Orochimaru definitely strikes me as the kind of man who would strike a deal with extra-dimensional invaders in exchange for knowledge not available on Earth, with the intention of betraying them once they got strong enough to become a risk to his plans, of course.

I'm going with the idea that the transformations are based off of their subconscious expectations in the case of Minako and Usagi. Once Usagi chooses a form for the uniforms, it sets everyone else's tranformations to be based off of hers. There are benefits to being the princess. This is why Sailor V's design was different from the Senshi but became the same when she came to join up with them, in my interpretation of events at least.

Usagi's healing abilities make her very popular, especially since one thing she can do is replenish someone else's chakra. This power was supposed to be for restoring energy to someone who had been drained by a youma, but it can also be used to replenish energy spent to fuel jutsu. By the time of the chunin exam(which she won't participate in, by the way. No way she would be ready that fast), she will have developed her purification abilities to the point that she can cure Sasuke's mark with very little effort, totally derailing Orochimaru's plan for him. I wasn't planning on having many crossovers with canon events and characters, but there would be several points where she, without realizing it, completely derails some canon event, often by accident.

I haven't finished reading the manga(there is a lot of it to read), but from what I know of the events involved, I was thinking of going for this for the Akatsuki: The juubi is a myth. It never existed. However, the knowledge that filtered down that the bijuu were carrying fragments of a single immense power from the moon warped into them being fragments of a single being from the moon, who obviously had ten tails since that completes the observed tail pattern. Their tendency to get in the way while going after jinchuriki and biijuu that the Dark Kingdom is going after gets several members of the akatsuki killed, though it could also result in some of them getting hired by the Dark Kingdom. Some ninja getting hired is perfectly reasonable, but I don't think they would show up much in the actual story, being more references than in story events.

Usagi's abilities to detect others in danger don't awaken early enough for her to even notice the slaughter of the Uchihas. However, when she cures Sasuke of his curse seal she also accidentally cures the PTSD that keeps him so obsessed and focused on the worst day of his life. He will still remember it, but it will no longer have the same weight and force in his memories, allowing him to move on if he chooses to do so. With all of the positive experiences he goes through and the example of the strongest individuals he knows not getting their strength through turning on their friends but by relying on them, he would eventually become a very different character from canon. This would take time, though, which would mean months or years of writing, so it would likely never become clear in the story unless I ended with a 'ten years later'.

Is there a Rinnegan and a 6 paths sage in the past?

I know so little about this right now that I can't answer the question.

Mamoru Chiba would be a medic nin, of course. With how much younger they go into the jobs in Naruto, there would have to be no age difference between them to make Usagi usable as a ninja and Mamoru not a medic nin yet. I haven't decided how I would change things for him yet, but if I went with the Black Moon arc, I would have him questioning Kurenai about the possibility of his nightmares regarding Usagi being a genjutsu and asking for advice from others about whether he should tell Usagi. By this point, he would have an established ability of precognition, so the ninja he asks for help would know to take his dreams seriously, and know that precognition is almost never as clear cut as it seems. I don't like how so many fanfic writers treat him as Mamoron, though I can understand with the way the dubbed version of the anime portrays him. Even in the manga, the author put too much effort into trying to keep him distant and mysterious and wound up making him seem uninterested and innefectual.

Since the generals and Beryl (manga) are modern humans "awakened" by Metalia into their roles (the woman who became Beryl was an archaeologist who delved into wrong ruins), the four generals would have all been powerful ninja, maybe even someone of Akatsuki. Imagine the Akatsuki leader suddenly remembering he's Kunzite (uh-oh^2)

That would be really scary. When SM awakens, Dark Kingdom has already infiltrated many major Ninja villages replacing their leadership with its Kage+ level generals. With Akatsuki already infiltrated and subverted and Orochimaru being accidentally stepped on and squashed.

That would be an enemy powerful enough to challenge even the Jinchuriki comparable Senshi.
