Card Captor Yue (Negima x CCS)

Yue Ayase is just about the last person you’d ever expect to be a magical girl. For one thing she’s a cynic and hasn’t seen any point to life since her grandfather died. She has friends, but with one exception they’re more acquaintances or fellow club members than people she likes to hang out with, and you’re unlikely to ever hear her make a speech about The Power of Friendship. At the end of the day, the only things she really trusts are her books.

And then one day, shortly before class 3A is due for their trip to Kyoto, Yue makes a solo trip into the depths of Library Island. Normally she’d travel with Nodoka or one of the other members of the Library Exploration Club, but today she’s feeling more fed up with the world than normal courtesy of a phone call from the parents she doesn’t get along with, and skips on the buddy system in favor of going it alone. While rappelling down a bookshelf to claim an old philosophy text however, her rope snaps and Yue plunges into the deepest reaches of the library.

She awakens in a pool of water somewhere in the library’s restricted section, a place of ancient and priceless tomes that are off-limits to the students. Among those books is one that calls to Yue like a siren’s song. Entranced, Yue opens it… and her life changes forever.

The book Yue has found is the legendary Book of Clow from the manga version of Card Captor Sakura; it holds 19 magical cards created by the legendary sorcerer Clow Reed, who created this unique form of magic by blending elements of the eastern and western styles of magic, using eastern spirits and a variation of the western pactio system to create a hybrid style possessing all the strengths and few of the weaknesses of both eastern and western magic. Unfortunately this drew the ire of both eastern and western mages in a time period when the feuding between the two sides was much fiercer than it is today, and Clow was murdered to ensure his magic would never become widespread.

Yue, of course, knows nothing of this. The idea that magic exists in the first place is an absurdity to her, and she firmly believes at first that she is vividly hallucinating when Kero pops out of the book, hands her the star key, and proclaims her to be the new mistress of the cards. The cards don’t scatter themselves across Mahora because Clow was killed before he could finish his plans to mark Sakura as his successor, and the cards are not part of any plan to train up their next master. That’s good, because Yue is about to have much bigger problems than capturing mischievous spirits.

When she gets back to the surface (courtesy of the Fly card) Yue finds Eva and Chachamaru waiting for her, and the pair of them immediately drag her off to see old man Konoemon, who gives her two options: either learn to use magic in order to keep her powers and the cards under control, or have her memories erased and lose her magic. Since Yue isn’t all that hot on having people screwing around with her head, she goes for the first option, and Konoemon makes arrangements for her to begin learning from Evangeline after the school trip to Kyoto.

Well, we all know how the Kyoto trip goes to hell in a handbasket, and of course now that Yue knows about magic she’s going right along with it whether she likes it or not. But using her powers in Kyoto, right in the heart of the Kansai Magic Association’s power, means that word gets out that Clow Reed’s hybrid magic has returned from the dead; for many mages on both sides of the eastern/western rivalry, Yue has inadvertently painted a great big target over her head, and as Evangeline points out, the sort of mages who would kill to keep Clow’s magic under wraps are the sort of mages who will target Yue’s friends and classmates to get to her. With Negi distracted by his own problems and his quest to find Nagi, Yue is left with two choices; master her magic and become the new Mistress of the Clow Cards, or watch her world crumble around her.

Sounds like a pretty good idea actually. Yue would work well with the CCS series style magic. She'd probably be particularly effective from a tactical standpoint since the cards are best used in a strategic manner, not as a brute force or the classic clumsy magic girl. It would also be interesting to see Yue deal with any mages coming after her.
What is the true purpose of life?
