Re: General Error received while accessing forum

I occasionally get a notice from the host about an SQL query timing out, and every time it's a basic SELECT query that should only take a few seconds or something. I'll try to optimize the tables, if that'll help, but I'm thinking it's a problem with someone else on the server overtaxing MySQL.

Re: [Fixed] Glyches and such

To clarify, I fixed the incorrect unread message count. If you have duplicate messages hanging around you'll have to delete those yourself. I don't want to look into people's private messages any more than I have to.

Re: Glyches and such

Think I fixed it. If any legitimate private messages go missing, let me know and I'll go backup diving for them. Otherwise, I'll consider this closed.

Re: Downtime and Data Loss

Well, it's not like you'd need a JavaScript for rounded corners at this point, considering even Internet Explorer supports the CSS property border-radius now. The problems you've had before with submitting pages and the like were because the previous server was slow and not administered well. I don'...

Re: Front page of website gone?

It's not that complicated to redo, but I haven't had the time to set it up again yet. Between having a man taking all day to clean our furnace here, and the opening day of firearm deer hunting season in Michigan, things around the house have been hectic and all the time I had needed to be spent gett...

Downtime and Data Loss

A harddrive in our server failed and it corrupted the database. Unfortunately, backups were corrupted, so we weren't able to recover all the lost data. As a result, we lost roughly 6,800 posts and 385 topics. I apologize for this. I should've done a better job ensuring we had frequent, working backu...

Re: Server Clock

I have no control over the server clock, so there isn't really anything I can do about that. It's not like timestamps are that critical for a forum though as long as they're mostly accurate. We still know when something was posted, and 10 minutes doesn't matter much.

Re: new bugs to squish

As far as searches go, I'm using a new system for searches (Sphinx, as opposed to a horribly slow by comparison mysql fulltext index or phpBB's hackish excuse for a fulltext search). If search acts up, that's why. I'm trying to get it working well but it'll probably be glitchy for a while. Hopefully...

Shiny new VPS! (aka Scheduled Downtime on October 12, 2009)

As you can see now, the site is up again, on our shiny new VPS. Everything should be working, but keep an eye out for bugs. The Temple will be taken down this evening. Not much warning, I know, but this act of maintenance is rather important... It will start at 12:00am EST . That's 4:00am GMT I ...

Re: Yuki-onna

Which side of the family does the Winters ancestry come from? James' or Lily's? The Winters ancestry comes to Harry via Lily. She's not as muggleborn as she'd like you to think. <.< Will you still use the scene with Hermione and her mother from the old version or will you go into a completely diffe...

Re: Yuki-onna

Newer, update, and the actual full first chapter! I've got a bit of the first scene of chapter two written, but it's slow going so far. I thought I'd post chapter one here though for anyone who hasn't seen it in IRC. Comments and suggestions are always welcome. --------------------------------------...

Re: Downtime and Upgrades

It might just be a matter of having so many legacy messages in our databases that the server is having problems dealing with them all. I really don't know enough about bulletin boards to know if there's some sort of practical limit. Since I just got done trimming the user list, it doesn't seem like...

Re: New Forum still Errors when posting.

I'm afraid that there's nothing I can do about that particular error. It comes down to our host having poor configuration, and underpowered systems. If I actually could do something it'd be even worse configuration to be honest (a client controlling a shared MySQL server? *shudder*). For laughs: the...

Re: Downtime and Upgrades

For added fun, and because I had to tweak something seekrit in the code, I just added a beginning and end post text field to user profiles, so you can set text that automatically shows up in the post editor. Not a whole lot of use, but I thought that certain members would appreciate it since they al...
